María Teresa Del Canto
María Teresa del Canto Molina (18 January 1898 – 14 May 1987) was a Chilean teacher and politician. She was the country's second woman to become a minister of state, after Adriana Olguín. She also served as mayor of Santiago from 1953 to 1957. Biography María Teresa del Canto was born in Catemu on 18 January 1898. She began her education in San Felipe, attending a boys' school, as there were no girls' schools in the city at the time. After obtaining the title of English Teacher from the Pedagogical School of Santiago, she worked in that capacity in San Felipe, San Carlos, and Rengo, retiring in 1950. She was a member of the Women's Party of Chile, and was its national director of social affairs. On 3 November 1952, she took office as Minister of Education in the second government of Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, after the position was turned down by fellow Women's Party member María de la Cruz. Catemu
Catemu is a city and commune in the San Felipe de Aconcagua Province of central Chile's Valparaíso Region. Geography Catemu spans an area of . Demographics According to data from the 2002 Census of Population and Housing, the Catemu commune had 12,112 inhabitants; of these, 6,706 (55.4%) lived in urban areas and 5,406 (44.6%) in rural areas. At that time, there were 6,172 men and 5,940 women. The population grew by 7.2% (817 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. Administration As a commune, Catemu is a third-level administrative division of Chile, administered by a communal council (''consejo comunal''), which is headed by a directly elected alcalde. Jorge Alessandri
Jorge Eduardo Alessandri Rodríguez (; 19 May 1896 – 31 August 1986) was the 26th president of Chile from 1958 to 1964, and was the candidate of the Chilean right in the crucial presidential election of 1970, which he lost to Salvador Allende. He was the son of Arturo Alessandri, who was president from 1920 to 1925 and again from 1932 to 1938. Early years Jorge Alessandri was born in Santiago. He studied at Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera, prestigious public high school of Santiago, and University of Chile, and after graduating in 1919 worked there as a lecturer. After the fall of the parliamentary republic, he lived in European exile with his parents from 1924 to 1925, but returned to his native land where he was elected to parliament as an independent from a Santiago constituency in 1926.
