Mary (Tori Amos Song)
"Mary" is a song by singer, songwriter, and pianist Tori Amos. First released as a B-side to UK pressings of her 1992 single "Crucify", it was later re-recorded for the compilation '' Tales of a Librarian'' and released as a digital single. Like many of Amos' singles, it was released digitally only but a promotional CD release was made for radio stations. Background "Mary" was one of the ten tracks originally sent to Atlantic Records for Amos' debut album, ''Little Earthquakes''. However, upon Atlantic's rejection of these tracks, more songs were written and it did not appear on the final album. Like all of the B-sides from the sessions for ''Little Earthquakes'', it was included on the bonus disc of the album's 2015 deluxe edition. Tori Amos
Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a classically trained musician with a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Having already begun composing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person ever to have been admitted. She had to leave at the age of eleven when her scholarship was discontinued for what ''Rolling Stone'' described as "musical insubordination". "Crucify" is a song by American singer-songwriter and musician Tori Amos. It was released as the fifth single from her debut studio album '' Little Earthquakes'', on May 12, 1992, by Atlantic Records in North America and on June 8 by EastWest Records in the UK. In Australia, it was released on July 20, 1992. Background The song served as the fifth single from the album '' Little Earthquakes''. It was released as an EP in the US and as a single in Europe and Australia. The EP version of the same name includes a single remix, famous cover versions, and "Winter", which was released earlier as a single from the album. It sold 450,000 copies in the US according to Soundscan as of 2005, coming close to a Gold certification. Although the EP sold extremely well, it failed to chart on the Billboard 200. Davitt Sigerson (born 1957) is an American retired songwriter, record producer, record executive, and journalist. Early life and education Davitt Sigerson was born in New York City and attended school at Oxford University in England. Career Sigerson remained in England, writing about music for ''Black Music'', '' Sounds'', ''Melody Maker'', and '' Time Out'', before returning to the U.S. in 1979, from where he wrote for ''The Village Voice'', ''Rolling Stone'', and ''The New York Times''. ''A Tori Amos Collection: Tales of a Librarian'' is the first retrospective compilation album by American singer-songwriter Tori Amos. Given the option to be involved in the project, Amos elected to take a central role in the production of the collection, released in 2003 on her former label Atlantic Records. Amos described the compilation as a "sonic autobiography", a title derived from her dislike of the term "greatest hits". Recording under the premise that a librarian is a "chronicler", Amos pieced together the collection in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System; so, for example, "Sweet Dreams", which contains the lyrics "Land, land of liberty / We're run by a constipated man", is listed as "973.938: History of North America -- Politics of Illusion". ''Little Earthquakes'' is the debut solo album by the American singer-songwriter Tori Amos, featuring the singles " Silent All These Years", "China", "Winter" and " Crucify". After Atlantic Records rejected the first version of the album, Amos began working on a second version with her then-boyfriend Eric Rosse.
