The school's team currently competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Red Foxes have qualified for the NCAA tournament twice (1986, 1987), losing in the first round in both instances. Prior to joining the MAAC in 1997, Marist was a charter member of the ECAC Metro Conference in 1981; which became the Northeast Conference in 1988. History The Marist men's basketball team's first varsity season was 1961–62 at the NCAA Division III level. For 20 years Marist would play at this level. The Indiana Pacers are an American professional basketball team based in Indianapolis. Jeffrey Bower (born April 26, 1961) is an American professional basketball coach and executive who last served as the vice president of basketball operations for the Phoenix Suns. Bower was also the former general manager for the Detroit Pistons from 2014 to 2018. He also served as the general manager and head coach of the New Orleans Hornets. Bower held the Hornets head coaching position during most of the 2009–10 season, and the general manager position twice, in 2002–03 and from 2005 to 2010. David William Magarity (born January 26, 1950) is an American college basketball coach who most recently was the head coach of the Army Black Knights women's basketball team. He previously served as the head men's basketball coach at St. Francis (PA) and Marist. Coaching career Magarity landed his first coaching job at his alma mater as an assistant coach in 1974, and was elevated to head coach at St. Francis in 1978, where he was 60–76 in five seasons. After a three-year stop at Iona as an assistant under Pat Kennedy and participated in the 1984 and 1985 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. Magarity accepted the head coaching position at Marist in 1986, where he stayed for 18 seasons, amassing a 253–259 record while guiding the Red Foxes to the 1987 NCAA tournament with Rik Smits, as well as a National Invitational Tournament appearance in 1996.
