Mike Marienthal
Michael Marienthal (June 19, 1923 – February 27, 2013) was a UCLA sports icon, football player and men’s basketball official scorer for 50 years. Born in Chicago, his family moved to California, where he graduated from Los Angeles High School in the winter of 1942. Marienthal served the UCLA and Los Angeles communities throughout his life. As a UCLA football player, he was a member of the 1942 team that advanced to the Rose Bowl for the first time in the school’s history. Early life After graduating from UCLA Naval ROTC, he joined the Marines and in May 1945 in the battle of Okinawa, Marienthal lost his left leg above the knee and severely injured his right leg in a mortar attack. He was awarded the U.S. Navy Letter of Commendation and the Purple Heart. He returned to UCLA in 1946 to complete his undergraduate degree. Eric Marienthal (born December 19, 1957) is a Grammy Award-nominated Los Angeles-based contemporary saxophonist best known for his work in the jazz, jazz fusion, smooth jazz, and pop genres. Early life Eric Marienthal was born on December 19, 1957, in Sacramento, California, to Robert Marienthal, an insurance salesman, but moved to San Mateo, California, San Mateo when he was two years old. He has credited his enthusiasm for music on being taught music while in school, and picked up the saxophone in the fourth grade after he thought it looked "pretty cool". Marienthal has also mentioned his father was a fan of music, particularly 1940s and 1950s such as Boots Randolph, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. He initially wanted to pick up the trumpet but a teacher discouraged him because of his braces. Marienthal is a census-designated place (CDP) in Wichita County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 64. History In 1892, the community was founded by a group of immigrant Volga Germans; they named it after their previous hometown of Marienthal (Tonkoschurovka), Russia (today Sovetskoya, Russia), located in the district of Saratov, on the east bank of the Volga River. The post office was established March 18, 1902. The USPS discontinued service to Marienthal in 2011; the post office was officially closed in 2017. Marienthal now consists of roughly 100 people, a Catholic church, a flour mill, a substance abuse treatment center, a trucking company, a bar and a grain elevator.
