Marcus Aemilius Scaurus (consul 115 BC)
Marcus Aemilius Scaurus ( – ) was a Roman statesman who served as consul in 115 BC. He was also a long-standing ''princeps senatus'', occupying the post from 115 until his death in late 89 or early 88 BC, and as such was widely considered one of the most prestigious and influential politicians of the late Republic. After his consulship, Scaurus wrote '' De vita sua'', which was probably the first autobiography in Roman history. Family background Scaurus was born probably in 161 BC into the famous ''gens'' Aemilia, one of the most successful patrician ''gentes'' of the Republic. However, despite their patrician status, the Aemilii Scauri did not have the prominence of the other branches of the gens. No ancestor of Scaurus is known to have held a magistracy, albeit he might have descended from the Aemilii Barbulae, who counted several consuls between 317 and 230. Marcus Aemilius Scaurus (praetor 56 BC)
Marcus Aemilius Scaurus (born 92 BC; until 52 BC) was a Ancient Rome, Roman politician of the 1st century BC and son of Marcus Aemilius Scaurus (consul), Marcus Aemilius Scaurus and Caecilia Metella (daughter of Delmaticus), Caecilia Metella. Initially a supporter of Pompey, Scaurus fought under his command during the Third Mithridatic War, and later governed Syria. Ascending the ''cursus honorum'', he threw magnificent games while curule aedile and later served as praetor. Receiving as his province Sardinia, he was charged with extortion on his return to Rome but was successfully defended by many eminent senators. His bid for the consulship of 53 BC was unsuccessful; in 52 BC he was convicted of bribery during those elections and went into exile. His fall was perhaps due to his marriage with Mucia, a former wife of Pompey, with whom he fell out of favour as a result. Marcus Aemilius Scaurus (son Of Mucia)
Marcus Aemilius Scaurus was the son of Marcus Aemilius Scaurus (Praetor 56 BC) and Mucia Tertia, former wife of Pompey the Great. Sextus Pompey was his half-brother. He accompanied Sextus to Asia after the defeat of his fleet in Sicily by Octavian's general Marcus Agrippa. In 35 BC, he betrayed his brother to Marcus Antonius's generals. After the Battle of Actium, Aemilius fell into the hands of Octavian but was able to escape death thanks to the intercession of his mother, Mucia. Marcus Aemilius had a son, Mamercus, who distinguished himself as a poet and orator.
