Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area
The Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of one county – Richland – in north central Ohio, anchored by the city of Mansfield. As of the 2020 census, the MSA had a population of 124,936. The MSA forms the eastern half of the Mansfield–Ashland–Bucyrus, OH CSA. History The Mansfield metropolitan area was first defined in 1971. Then known as the Mansfield Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area (Mansfield SMSA), it consisted of a single county – Richland – and had a population of 129,997 in the 1970 census. By the census of 1980, the population had grown to 131,205. In 1983, the official name was shortened to the Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (Mansfield MSA), which is still in use to date. Blooming Grove Township is one of the eighteen townships of Richland County, Ohio, United States. There are two communities within the township, Ganges and Shenandoah. The township is a part of the Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 2020 census found 1,295 people in the township. Olivesburg is an unincorporated community in northeastern Weller Township, Richland County, Ohio, United States. It is part of the Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is on the bank of the Whetstone Creek, about two miles north of its junction with the Blackfork of the Mohican River. The community is served by the Ashland (44805) post office. Today, the town consists of little more than a general store. It has an advertising sign posted for Olivesburg Dynamite, indicating the town once had a manufacturer of explosives. Shiloh, Richland County, Ohio
Shiloh is a village in Richland County in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is part of the Mansfield, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 619 at the 2020 census. History Shiloh was platted in September 1852 at the junction of the Sandusky and Mansfield Railroad, the Cleveland and Columbus Railroad, and a road between the cities of Tiffin and Wooster. It was originally named "Salem Station" because of its proximity to the village of Salem, which ceased to exist soon after the newer community was founded. In 1862, the name was changed to "Shiloh", but the reasons for the change are unclear: in 1908, some local citizens testified that it was named in honor of the Battle of Shiloh, a Civil War battle fought in 1862, while others stated that it was given in memory of the biblical Shiloh. Plymouth, Ohio
Plymouth is a village in Huron and Richland counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,707 at the 2020 census. The Richland County portion of Plymouth is part of the Mansfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the Huron County portion is part of the Norwalk Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Plymouth was laid out in 1825. The village was named after Plymouth Rock. Plymouth was incorporated in 1834. Plymouth was formerly the headquarters of the Plymouth Locomotive Works, a builder of industrial railroad locomotives. The factory closed in 1999. The company designed and built an automobile named Plymouth in the early part of the century, but it was not mass-produced, but there were trucks and tractors produced by Commercial Motor Truck Company under the Plymouth name in the same period. Lucas is a village in southeastern Richland County, Ohio, United States. Lucas is part of the Mansfield, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 589 at the 2020 census. History David Tucker, a New Hampshire resident, moved to Richland County in 1819, where he set in a proposal to buy land in the rural country of the county. He was granted this proposal in 1824, allowing him to buy land from the state at $1.25 per acre. After purchasing a mass quantity of land from the state, Tucker hired Mr. Steward to survey the land for auctioning out. David's brother, John, was placed in charge as the head attorney authored to sell land to incoming settlers and pioneers in 1829. The auction was advertised in the local handbill "The Mansfield Shield and Banner", in which the land was described as "as good as a wheat growing country as the state can have." Butler, Ohio
Butler is a village in Richland County in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is part of the Mansfield, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 941 at the 2020 census. Early history Before Butler was founded and named, it was the site of the Delaware Indians hunting ground. Helltown, as the Indians called it, was chosen for its plentiful wild game and fertile farmlands. As early as 1808, settlers were living in Northeastern Worthington township, however the area that makes up Butler was not settled until another 10 years. Joseph Craig was the first white man to settle in the Butler area. James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States, had given Craig a land grant in 1823. Samuel Lewis, another interesting man, traveled through the area in 1809. On January 7, 1813, Lewis organized and divided Richland area into townships. Butler became Worthington township. Shelby is a city in Richland County, Ohio, United States. Located northwest of the city of Mansfield, Ohio, Mansfield, it is part of the Mansfield metropolitan area. The population was 9,282 as of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History Shelby was originally called Gamble's Mills, and under the latter name was platted in 1834. On Tornado outbreak of April 13–15, 2019, April 14, 2019, Shelby was struck by a long tracked Enhanced Fujita scale, EF2 Tornado with winds of 120-125 Miles per hour, MPH.
