''The Man on the Roof'' () is a 1976 Swedish police procedural-Thriller (genre), thriller film directed by Bo Widerberg. It is based on the 1971 novel ''The Abominable Man'' by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The film stars Carl-Gustaf Lindstedt, Sven Wollter, Thomas Hellberg and Håkan Serner. Widerberg's direction was inspired by the 1971 American film ''The French Connection (film), The French Connection'', and Widerberg would make one more crime film in 1984: ''The Man from Majorca''. Bo Widerberg
Bo Gunnar Widerberg (; 8 June 1930 – 1 May 1997) was a Sweden, Swedish film director, screenwriter, writer, film editing, editor and actor. Biography Early life Widerberg was born in Malmö, Malmöhus County, Sweden. Career Bo Widerberg began his career as a writer. In 1952 came his first novel, ''Hösttermin''. In the same year, his short story collection ''Kyssas, published by'' Bonnier, became a bestseller. His most successful book was the novel ''Erotikon'' (1957). The novel's title comes from Mauritz Stiller's silent film classic ''Erotikon'' (1920). Widerberg's last novel is ''Den gröna draken'', which was published in 1959 and is a satire on the advertising industry. Lars Ingvar Hirdwall (5 December 1934 – 6 April 2023) was a Swedish actor. In Sweden he is best known for his role in the Martin Beck film series; internationally he was perhaps best known for his role as the lawyer Dirch Frode in the ''Millennium'' films. Martin Beck is a fictional Swedish police detective and the main character in a series of ten novels by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, collectively titled ''The Story of a Crime''. Frequently referred to as the Martin Beck stories, all were adapted into films between 1967 and 1994. Six were adapted for the series featuring Gösta Ekman as Martin Beck. Between 1997 and 2018, there were also 38 films (some released direct for video and broadcast on television) based on the characters, with Peter Haber as Martin Beck. The Guldbagge Awards (, ) is an official and annual Sweden, Swedish film awards ceremony honoring achievements in the Swedish film industry. Winners are awarded a statuette depicting a Cetonia aurata, rose chafer, better known by the name Guldbaggen. ''The Man from Majorca'' () is a 1984 Swedish crime thriller film directed by Bo Widerberg. It is based on the novel ''The Pig Party'' by Leif G. W. Persson. The film stars Sven Wollter and Tomas von Brömssen. The novel has big similarities with the Geijer affair (a rumor that the Swedish minister of justice had been with prostitutes, that the Swedish police had knowledge of it and had informed the prime minister). Leif G.W. Persson lost his job at the police because talking to a journalist about his knowledge about the Geijer case, but denied in the preface of the book (''Grisfesten'') which he wrote soon after, that it had any connections to the affair. Widerberg took inspiration from the 1971 American film '' The French Connection'', and ''The Man from Majorca'' share similarities with his previous thriller film: '' The Man on the Roof'' (1976).
