Manfred Mann
Manfred Mann were an English Rock music, rock band formed in London in 1962. They were named after their keyboardist Manfred Mann (musician), Manfred Mann, who later led the successful 1970s group Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The group had two lead vocalists: Paul Jones (singer), Paul Jones from 1962 to 1966 and Mike d'Abo from 1966 to 1969. Other members of various group line-ups were Mike Hugg, Mike Vickers, Dave Richmond, Tom McGuinness (musician), Tom McGuinness, Jack Bruce (later of Cream (band), Cream) and Klaus Voormann. Prominent in the Swinging London scene of the 1960s, the group regularly appeared in the UK Singles Chart. Monaural sound or monophonic sound (often shortened to mono) is sound intended to be heard as if it were emanating from one position. This contrasts with stereophonic sound or ''stereo'', which uses two separate audio channels to reproduce sound from two microphones on the right and left side, which is reproduced with two separate loudspeakers to give a sense of the direction of sound sources. __NOTOC__ David Henry Richmond (born 29 March 1938 in Brighton, Sussex, England) is a British professional bass player, best known as a founder member of the 1960s pop group Manfred Mann. During his short tenure with the group, he played bass on their first hit record, " 5-4-3-2-1". Richmond first picked up the ukulele at the age of 14. He later picked up the bass after hearing " Big Noise From Winnetka" on a record player, owned by his older brother. Probably the most famous song that features Richmond on bass guitar is the 1969 version of Je t'aime... moi non plus by its composer Serge Gainsbourg and his then girlfriend Jane Birkin, and the song became a number one hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1969 (it was also notable for being the first foreign-language song that managed to top the UK singles chart) as well as topping the charts in Austria, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland that year. Tom McGuinness (musician)
Thomas John Patrick McGuinness (born 2 December 1941) is an English guitarist, singer and songwriter who played guitar and bass with rock band Manfred Mann, among others, before becoming a record and television producer. Early life McGuinness was born in Wimbledon, South London in 1941, studied at Wimbledon College and has Irish ancestry. One of his first bands, The Roosters, included an 18-year old Eric Clapton on lead guitar. Career Manfred Mann Following a stint in the short-lived Roosters with Eric Clapton, McGuinness joined the 1960s group Manfred Mann as a bassist, performing in a line-up with Paul Jones. Mike Vickers
Michael Graham Vickers (born 18 April 1940) is an English musician who came to prominence as the guitarist, flautist, and saxophonist with the 1960s band Manfred Mann. Early life Vickers was born in Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey. At the age of seven, his family moved to Scotland, and when he was eleven, to Southampton, where he attended King Edward VI School. Career Manfred Mann Vickers originally played flute and saxophone, but with the increasing popularity of guitars in bands, it was decided that Manfred Mann should have a guitarist in their lineup. Vickers volunteered for this role, though he always preferred playing woodwind. His tough flute soloing on hard blues tracks, such as "Without You", prefigured the work of Ian Anderson with Jethro Tull five years later. ''Ready Steady Go!'' (or ''RSG!'') was a British rock/pop music television programme broadcast every Friday evening from 9 August 1963 until 23 December 1966. It was conceived by Elkan Allan, head of Rediffusion TV. Allan wanted a light entertainment programme different from the low-brow style of light entertainment transmitted by ATV. The programme was produced without scenery or costumes and with a minimum of choreography and make-up. Allan recruited a fellow journalist, Francis Hitching, as producer. Hitching became a major figure in light entertainment in the 1960s. Robert Fleming was the first director, followed by the documentary director Rollo Gamble, then Michael Lindsay-Hogg, Daphne Shadwell and Peter Croft. Michael John Hugg (born 11 August 1940) is a British musician who was a founding member of the 1960s group Manfred Mann, and co-founder of the psychedelic jazz-fusion group, Manfred Mann Chapter Three. He is known for his creativity in his music, and always made jingles for advertisements. Career Manfred Mann Hugg first thought about wanting a career in music when he was sixteen years old. Pursuing a career in jazz, he met the pianist Manfred Mann while working as a musician at Butlin's Clacton, and they formed a seven-piece group. The Mann–Hugg Blues Brothers recruited Paul Jones and later Tom McGuinness. Upon their signing with His Master's Voice, their producer, John Burgess, changed their name to Manfred Mann. Paul Jones (born Paul Adrian Pond, 24 February 1942) is an English singer, actor, harmonicist, radio personality and television presenter. He first came to prominence as the original lead singer and harmonicist of the rock band Manfred Mann (1962–66) with whom he had several hit records including " Do Wah Diddy Diddy" ( UK #1, US #1) and " Pretty Flamingo" (UK #1). After leaving the band, Jones established a solo career and starred as a deified pop star in the 1967 film '' Privilege''.
