Malaysia–United States Relations
Bilateralism, Bilateral ties between Malaysia and the United States were established upon Merdeka Day, Malayan independence in 1957. The US was, and still is one of the largest trading partners for Malaysia and is traditionally considered to be Malaysia's oldest and closest ally in military, economic and education sectors. Federation of Malaya, Malaya was the predecessor state to Malaysia, a larger federation formed through the merger of Malaya, Crown Colony of North Borneo, North Borneo, Crown Colony of Sarawak, Sarawak and Crown Colony of Singapore, Singapore in 1963. Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob
Muhammad Shahrul Ikram bin Yaakob (; born 21 May 1961) is a Malaysian diplomat who served as the 18th List of ambassadors of Malaysia to the United States, Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States since June 2025. He also served as the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Malaysia), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia from January 2019 until May 2022, succeeded Ramlan Ibrahim.
