Malé
Malé is the capital and most populous city of the Maldives. With a population of 211,908 in 2022 within its administrative area and coterminous geographical area of , Malé is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The city is geographically located in the southern edge of North Malé Atoll ( Kaafu Atoll). Administratively, the city consists of a central island, an airport island, and five other islands presided over by the Malé City Council. Traditionally it was the King's Island, from where the ancient royal dynasties ruled and where the palace was located. The city was then called ''Mahal''. Formerly it was a walled city surrounded by fortifications and gates (''doroshi''). Kaafu Atoll
Kaafu Atoll is the code name given to an administrative division in the Republic of Maldives which consists of the geographical atolls of Kaashidhoo Island, Gaafaru, North Malé Atoll and South Malé Atoll. As the two Malé Atolls are the main islands of the administrative district, the entire Kaafu Atoll administrative division is officially named Malé Atoll or Malé Atolhu in the Dhivehi language. The capital of the administrative division is Thulusdhoo. Although Malé, the capital of the Maldives, and the adjacent islands of Vilingili, Hulhule and Hulhumalé, are geographically part of the North Malé Atoll, they do not form part of the Kaafu Atoll administrative division and are a separate administrative division. Villingili (Villimalé)
Villingili, administratively known as Villimalé is an island in the North Male Atoll and is considered the fifth district of Malé City. It lies about two kilometres (1.2 mi) west of Malé island and is reachable via local ferry service that operates 24 hours, between Malé and Villimalé. Location within Malé City Villimalé is to the west of Malé Island: History Villingili was historically inhabited and was often burned and looted by frustrated Malabar pirates who could not penetrate the defenses of Malé. Hulhulé
Hulhulé (), located at , is an island in the North Malé Atoll of the Maldives where the city's airport, Velana International Airport, is located. The island has no permanent population. It is one of the islands closest to the capital island Malé. Hulhulé is considered a ward of Malé. The Sinamalé Bridge links the island with Malé. The bridge, which has two car lanes and separate lanes for motorcycles and pedestrians, opened on 30 August 2018. Malé Friday Mosque
The Malé Friday Mosque, also known as the Malé Hukuru Miskiy (), or the Old Friday Mosque, is a Sufi Sunni mosque, located in the city of Malé, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives. Completed in 1658, the mosque is the oldest and most ornate mosque in the Maldives. Coral boulders of the genus '' Porites'', found throughout the archipelago, are the basic materials used for construction of this and other mosques in the country because of its suitability. Although the coral is soft and easily cut to size when wet, it makes sturdy building blocks when dry. The mosque was added to the tentative UNESCO World Heritage cultural list in 2008 as unique examples of sea-culture architecture. Thilafushi
Thilafushi () is an artificial island created by government decision in 1991 as a municipal landfill situated to the west of Malé, and is located between Kaafu Atoll's Giraavaru and Gulhifalhu of the Maldives. History Thilafushi originally was a lagoon called "''Thilafalhu''" with a length of 7 km and a width of 200 metres at the shallowest regions. It came into existence following a series of discussions and efforts to resolve Malé's garbage predicament during the early 1990s. Islam is the state religion of the Maldives. The 2008 Constitution or "''Fehi Gānoon''" declares the significance of Islamic law in the country. Hulhumalé
Hulhumalé (; Dhivehi: ހުޅުމާލެ) is a reclaimed island located in the south of North Malé Atoll, Maldives. The artificial island is being built up by pumping sand from the sea floor, in order to meet the existing and future housing, industrial and commercial development demands of the Malé region and as a response to the threat posed by rising sea levels. The official settlement was inaugurated by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on May 12, 2004. Adam Azim (; born 17 December 1970) is a Maldivian politician who is currently serving as the Mayor of Malé since 22 January 2024. He won the Mayoral Elections, defeating ruling party, People's National Congress's candidate, Azima Shakoor. Career Adam Azim is the incumbent Mayor of Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Gadi Buru
The Gadi Buru () also known as the Bodu Gadi is a clock tower in Malé, the capital of the Maldives. Gadi Buru was built following the Silver Jubilee of Maldivian Independence and was demolished 2017. It was rebuilt and reopened in 2023. History The Gadi Buru clock tower was built in 1990 to celebrate the 25th Independence day of the Madives. It was built with the hospitality of Sri Lanka.
