Mailing's Building
Mailing's is a historic two-story building located at 617-619 S. Broadway in the Broadway Theater District in the Jewelry District and historic core of downtown Los Angeles. History Mailing's was built in 1930 and designed by S. Charles Lee, the same architect who designed the Los Angeles Theatre that this building shares its northern wall with. In 1979, when the Broadway Theater and Commercial District was added to the National Register of Historic Places, both Mailing's and Los Angeles Theater were listed as separate contributing properties in the district. The Broadway Theater District in the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles is the first and largest historic theater district listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). With twelve movie palaces located along a six-block stretch of Broadway, it is the only large concentration of movie palaces left in the United States. Concrete is a composite material composed of aggregate bound together with a fluid cement that cures to a solid over time. Government agencies, at the state, national, and local level in the United States, have differing definitions of what constitutes a contributing property but there are common characteristics. Local laws often regulate the changes that can be made to contributing structures within designated historic districts.
