Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar) is a United States Marine Corps installation that is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, which is the aviation element of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. It is located in Miramar, San Diego, Miramar, a community of San Diego, California, about north of downtown San Diego. The airfield has been named Mitscher Field since 1955, after Marc Mitscher, Admiral M. A. Mitscher, who was the commander of Fast Carrier Task Force, Task Force 58 during World War II. E-2 Hawkeye
The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is an American all-weather, carrier-capable tactical airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft. This twin-turboprop aircraft was designed and developed during the late 1950s and early 1960s by the Grumman Aircraft Company for the United States Navy as a replacement for the earlier, piston-engined E-1 Tracer, which was rapidly becoming obsolete. An airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system is an airborne radar early warning system designed to detect aircraft, ships, vehicles, missiles and other incoming projectiles at long ranges, as well as performing command and control of the battlespace in aerial warfare, aerial engagements by informing and directing friendly fighter aircraft, fighter and attack aircraft.
