Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland
Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grassland is a national grassland located in the Great Plains of the northern part of the U.S. state of Texas near Decatur, and within an hour's drive from Fort Worth. It is primarily used for recreation, such as hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. It is also used as grazing land for cattle and other livestock. Camping and other activities are free of charge, and visitors may camp in virtually any area of the park. Both pull-through and hike-in campsites are available. Some areas require a small fee for use, but these are few and clearly marked. Named after former U.S. president Lyndon B. Wise County, Texas
Wise County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 68,632. Its county seat is Decatur. Wise County is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth– Arlington metropolitan statistical area. Its Wise Eyes crime-watch program, eventually adopted by mostly rural counties in several states, was started in 1993 by then-Sheriff Phil Ryan. History On November 10, 1837, the Battle of the Knobs was fought in what is now Wise County between about 150 Native American warriors and 18 Republic of Texas soldiers under Lieutenant A. B. Benthuysen. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Texan soldiers held their ground, killing or wounding an estimated 50 Native Americans and losing 10 of their own men. Sabine National Forest
Sabine National Forest is located in East Texas near the Texas-Louisiana border. The forest is administered together with the other three United States National Forests and two National Grasslands located entirely in Texas, from common offices in Lufkin, Texas. There are local ranger district offices located in Hemphill. The forest covers a total of in five counties - Sabine (95,410 acres), Shelby (59,037 acres), San Augustine (4,317 acres), Newton (1,781 acres), and Jasper (64 acres). It includes the officially designated Indian Mounds Wilderness, which is a part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Rucker Pond
Rucker Pond is a reservoir within the LBJ National Grasslands. The pond is located in North Texas in Wise County near Decatur, and is operated by the United States Forest Service. It is off County Road 2650. Among Rucker Pond's fish species are largemouth bass. Rucker Pond is located within Area 55 of the LBJ National Grasslands (Map grid C1). The pond is accessible via unsealed Forest Service road 916, which intersects Wise County Road 2650. Recreation As part of the LBJ Grasslands, Rucker Pond is freely available for recreational use by the public. Activities include fishing, camping, hiking, and hunting.
