Loughlin O'Brien
Loughlin O'Brien (23 November 1821 – 17 April 1901), often spelled Laughlin O'Brien, was a New Zealand politician and judge. Early life O'Brien was born in 1821 in Dublin, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand in 1842. His father was Andrew O'Brien, who represented the City of Auckland electorate in the Auckland Provincial Council. He married Hélène Leopoldine Francoise Isabelle De Witte at St Patrick's Cathedral, Auckland, on 4 February 1856, with the wedding ceremony carried out by Bishop Pompallier. His Belgian-born wife was from Waiheke Island, and her father Charles Antoine Joseph De Witte was the Belgian consul to New Zealand. Professional career He trained as a solicitor, first under Mr Conroy and then under Frederick Merriman. The Auckland Province was a province of New Zealand from 1853 until the abolition of provincial government in 1876. Area The province covered roughly half of the North Island of New Zealand. It was the largest of the six initial provinces, both by area and population. The southern boundary was mostly along the 39th latitude, which was an arbitrary line, as the country's interior was little known by Europeans. Superintendent was the elected head of each Provinces of New Zealand, Provincial Council in New Zealand from 1853 to 1876. History Provinces existed in New Zealand from 1841 until 1876 as a form of sub-national government. After the initial provinces pre-1853, new provinces were formed by the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852. This Act established the first six provinces of Auckland Province, Auckland, Taranaki Province, New Plymouth, Wellington Province, Wellington, Nelson Province, Nelson, Canterbury Province, Canterbury, and Otago Province, Otago. Ostend, New Zealand
Ostend is a settlement on Waiheke Island, in New Zealand's Hauraki Gulf within the Auckland Region. Ostend is located in the west of the island, on and around a small peninsula which juts into Putiki Bay, one of two large indentations in the island's southwest coast. The southwest of the island contains much of the island's population, with Ostend being located immediately to the east of the settlement of Surfdale, and to the southwest of Onetangi. Ostend is connected to Surfdale by a causeway which crosses the western arm of Putiki Bay. The area is used by boatsmen who moor their boats on the beach, as it is easy to access from the mainland marina at Half Moon Bay.
