Longwood Railway Station
Longwood is a closed station located in the town of Longwood, on the North East line, in Victoria, Australia. The station had a single platform on the east side of the former broad gauge line, with the standard gauge line running behind, in a deep cutting, with a pedestrian overpass providing station access. A former passing loop, with the same name, was located nearby. The station opened on 20 November 1872, as the temporary northern terminus of the line. A large goods shed was provided, with a station building erected in 1878. In 1885, a signal cabin was provided on the platform, being incorporated into the station building in 1916, and a crossing loop provided in 1926. North East Railway Line
The North East railway line is a railway line in Victoria, Australia. The line runs from Albury railway station in the border settlement of Albury–Wodonga to Southern Cross railway station on the western edge of the Melbourne central business district, serving the cities of Wangaratta and Seymour, and smaller towns in northeastern Victoria. The line is owned by VicTrack, but leased to, and maintained by, the Australian Rail Track Corporation, and forms part of the Sydney–Melbourne rail corridor. Unlike most other heavy rail lines in Victoria, the line is completely standard gauge, after works were carried out between 2008 and 2010. Longwood, Victoria
Longwood is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Strathbogie local government area, from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Longwood had a population of 263. History Longwood was first located on the old Sydney to Melbourne Highway (in the paddocks at Fred Tubb's farm) serving as a staging post for the horse-drawn coaches. The town moved east by around 4 km when the railway was built and a station established at Longwood. The Post Office opened on 1 July 1852 and the office named Longwood Railway Station opened in 1881. Longwood was later renamed Longwood East and Longwood Railway Station was renamed to Longwood. The town and surrounding countryside was the scene of a devastating bushfire on 17 January 1965. Seven people died fleeing the flames in a car. Passing Loop
A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. A passing loop is double-ended and connected to the main track at both ends, though a dead end siding known as a refuge siding, which is much less convenient, can be used. A similar arrangement is used on the gauntlet track of cable railways and funiculars, and in passing places on single-track roads. Ideally, the loop should be longer than all trains needing to cross at that point. The New Deal for Country Passengers was a timetable introduced on 4 October 1981 in Victoria, Australia which revolutionised the provision of country passenger railway services. Thirty-five little-used passenger stations were closed, rolling stock utilisation was improved, and new rolling stock introduced. The timetable and associated service changes resulted in an average patronage growth of 8.7% per year, from 3 million in 1981 to 5.6 million passengers in 1990/91. Political background The Victorian Railways had been stuck in something of a "time warp" for a number of decades. The Bland Report of 1972 recommended the restructuring of railway management, the closure of uneconomic branch lines, and the replacement of most country rail passenger services with road coaches. A railroad switch (), turnout, or ''set ofpoints () is a mechanical installation enabling railway trains to be guided from one track to another, such as at a railway junction or where a spur or siding branches off. The most common type of switch consists of a pair of linked tapering rails, known as ''points'' (''switch rails'' or ''point blades''), lying between the diverging outer rails (the ''stock rails''). These points can be moved laterally into one of two positions to direct a train coming from the point blades toward the straight path or the diverging path.
