Mayor
In many countries, a mayor is the highest-ranking official in a municipal government such as that of a city or a town. Worldwide, there is a wide variance in local laws and customs regarding the powers and responsibilities of a mayor as well as the means by which a mayor is elected or otherwise mandated. Depending on the system chosen, a mayor may be the chief executive officer of the municipal government, may simply chair a multi-member governing body with little or no independent power, or may play a solely ceremonial role. A mayor's duties and responsibilities may be to appoint and oversee municipal managers and employees, provide basic governmental services to constituents, and execute the laws and ordinances passed by a municipal governing body (or mandated by a state, territorial or national governing body). Harrison Ludington
Harrison Ludington (July 30, 1812June 17, 1891) was an American businessman, Republican politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He served as the 13th governor of Wisconsin and was the 20th and 22nd mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Early life and career Ludington was born in Ludingtonville, Putnam County, New York, in July 1812. He was educated in the district schools in New York, then came west to the Wisconsin Territory with his uncle, Lewis Ludington, in 1838. He became a partner with his uncle and Harvey Birchard in a merchandise business known as Ludington & Company, which operated out of a warehouse previously owned by Solomon Juneau. He continued with this business until 1851, when he became involved in a lumber business in partnership with Daniel Wells, Jr., and Anthony Van Schaick, known as Ludington, Wells, and Van Schaick. Joseph Phillips (Wisconsin Politician)
Joseph Phillips (November 6, 1825September 13, 1906) was an Alsatian American immigrant, businessman, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was the 19th mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, serving from April 1870 to April 1871, and also represented the city for three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly (1866, 1867, 1869). Early life Joseph Phillips was born in the Alsace region of France. As a child, he emigrated with his parents to the United States, settling first in Lancaster, New York, and later moving to Buffalo. Abner Kirby
Abner Kirby, Jr., (April 11, 1818September 23, 1893) was an American businessman, politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was the 16th mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and played an important role in the early growth and economic development of southeast Wisconsin. Early life Abner Kirby, Jr., was born in the town of Starks, Maine, when that area was still part of the state of Massachusetts. Kirby was raised on his father's farm and was educated in the district schools. At age 14, he spent his winters in logging camps, working as a cook because he was too young to chop wood, then bringing the logs down the river in the spring. Later in his teens, he apprenticed in a jeweler's shop in Bangor, Maine, and, at age 21, he opened his own watchmaker's and jeweler's shop in Skowhegan, Maine. Edward O'Neill (Wisconsin Politician)
Edward O'Neill (March 14, 1820 – March 28, 1890) was an American merchant, banker and politician, who served in the Wisconsin State Senate and the State Assembly; and four one-year terms as Mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as nine years on the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, four of them as its president. He was a Democrat. Background O'Neill was born March 14, 1820, in Killarney, Ireland, and was educated in the parochial schools. Horace Chase
Horace B. Chase (December 25, 1810September 1, 1886) was an American Democratic politician and Milwaukee County pioneer. He was the 14th mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, (1862) and represented southern Milwaukee County in the Wisconsin State Assembly during the 1st Wisconsin Legislature (1848). Biography Chase was born in Vermont, on Christmas Day of 1810 and lived near Derby, Vermont. One of Milwaukee's pioneers, he first arrived in Milwaukee in December 1834, left for Chicago, and returned to settle in Milwaukee in March 1835. Later in that year, Chase was the clerk of the first election in ever held in Milwaukee. He was an alderman, county supervisor, served in the first Wisconsin Constitutional Convention of 1846, and served as mayor of Milwaukee in 1862.
