This is a list of the highest settlements by country. Many of these are too small to be regarded as towns or cities. Only permanent settlements occupied year-round are included. When possible, the highest point in the contiguous year-round settlement is listed, though average heights or the elevations of a central point may also be found. The elevation of a settlement affects the social and physical arrangement of the place. In many cases, the cold climate in winter necessitates a particular style of house; the type of agriculture practised and the domestic animals kept there are limited; or the type of work carried on is specialised. La Rinconada, Peru
La Rinconada is a town in the Peruvian Andes near a gold mine. At up to above sea level, it is the highest permanent settlement in the world. Between 2001 and 2009, the population was estimated by ''National Geographic'' to have increased to 30,000 people from just a small gold prospector camp because the price of gold rose 235% over that period, although this number has not been reflected by the 2007 or 2017 censuses. Location La Rinconada is a populated center, within the jurisdiction of Ananea District, in San Antonio de Putina Province, Puno Department, Peru. La Rinconada is located in the Janca region, according to the classification of Pulgar Vidal, thus being the highest permanent town in the world. Gorakshep
Gorak Shep or Gorakshep ( ne, गोरकशेप) is a small settlement that sits on the edge of a frozen lakebed covered with sand in Nepal with the same name. It is found at an elevation of elevation, near Mount Everest. The village is not inhabited year-round. Even though trekking lodges at Gorak Shep are basic, in recent times more modern amenities have become available, such as satellite high-speed internet access. Trekking Gorak Shep is inside the Sagarmatha National Park, the homeland of the Sherpa people, famous for their skills as guides and mountaineers. It is the final stop on most common treks to Everest Base Camp from Lukla, following what the Dalai Lama dubbed "the steps to heaven." This route takes trekkers from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pangboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and on to Gorak Shep. Osh Province
Osh Region ( ky, Ош облусу, translit=Osh oblusu; russian: Ошская область, Oshskaya oblast) is a region (''oblast'') of Kyrgyzstan. Its capital is Osh, which is not part of the region. It is bounded by (clockwise) Jalal-Abad Region, Naryn Region, China (Xinjiang), Tajikistan (Districts under Central Government Jurisdiction and Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region), Batken Region, and Uzbekistan (Andijan Region, Andijan and Fergana Regions). Chatyndy
Daroot-Korgon (also ''Daraut-Kurghan'' or ''Darautkorgon'' or ''Daroot-Qurghan'') is a village in the western Alay Valley of Osh Region, Kyrgyzstan. It is the capital of Chong-Alay District. Its population was 6,421 in 2021. It is about 90 km west of Sary-Tash on the river Kyzyl-Suu. To the north is a route to Osh via the Tengizbay pass, used by Russian explorers before the construction of the road though Sary-Tash. To the south, the Altyn River flows north through a deep valley in the Trans-Alay Range. At the head of the valley is a Tajik border post and then Altyn Mazar on the river Muksu which flows west to join the Kyzyl-Suu. South of this is the foot of the Fedchenko Glacier. The village of Kara-Shybak is to the south, and Kyzyl-Eshme is to the east. Qarabolaq or Qareh Bulaq ( prs, قرهبلاق) is a small settlement in the Great Pamir in Wakhan District, Badakhshan Province, northeastern Afghanistan. It lies at an altitude of 4,139 m on the eastern shore of Zorkul lake, near the Afghan border with Tajikistan but also close to the Afghan borders with Pakistan and China. Amhara Region
The Amhara Region ( am, አማራ ክልል, Åmara Kilil), officially the Amhara National Regional State (), is a regional state in northern Ethiopia and the homeland of the Amhara people. Its capital is Bahir Dar which is the seat of the Regional Government of Amhara. Mina Pirquitas
Mina Pirquitas is a town and municipality in Jujuy Province in Argentina in the Rinconada Department, in Coyaguaima district, 355 km from the capital of Jujuy, accessed from the town of Abra Pampa by provincial routes 7 and RP 70 (138 km). Geography With residences at above sea level, it is the highest Argentinian year-round settlement. The localities of Olaroz Chico, at , and Chico Pairique at meters, (both located in the Province of Jujuy), are at higher elevations, but were considered by the National Census 1991 as dispersed rural communities with little or no year-round residences at those altitudes. Dughla is a small hamlet in Solukhumbu District in the Himalayas of Nepal, to the south of Khumbu Glacier. The settlement, consisting of several huts, is located at an elevation of , making it one of the highest settlements in the world, but likely not permanently inhabited all year around as it is essentially a collection of huts catering to hikers.
