List Of Black Sea Incidents Involving Russia And Ukraine
The following is a list of Black Sea incidents involving Russia and Ukraine since 2003 with the Tuzla Island conflict and is followed by the Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation, part of the Ukrainian crisis. 2003 In October 2003, Russia started to build a dam from the Taman Peninsula towards the Tuzla island in Ukraine (near Crimea) without any preliminary consultations with the Ukrainian government. After the construction of the 3.8 km long dam was stopped at the Russian-Ukrainian border. The construction of the dam caused the increased intensity of stream in the strait and deterioration of the Ukrainian Tuzla island. To save the island from deterioration, the Ukrainian authorities financed ground works to deepen the bed of the strait. The aim for the building a dam by Russia was to stop Russian ships from having to pay a toll to Ukraine while crossing the Strait of Kerch, which is considered as territorial waters of Ukraine. 2003 Tuzla Island Conflict
The 2003 Tuzla Island conflict was a brief armed confronation between Russia and Ukraine over Tuzla Island. Background Tuzla Island is a sandy island, located off of the coast of the Crimean Peninsula. Formerly a strait connected by land to the Kuban region of Russia, it was disconnected from it by heavy storm in 1925. In 1941, the island was transfered to the Crimean A.S.S.R. In 1954, Tuzla Island was tranferred to the Ukrainian S.S.R., alongside the rest of the then-Crimean Oblast. Tuzla Island come under the control of the briefly-independent Republic of Crimea before joining with Ukraine when the Crimean parliament joined Ukraine in 1995. The island was home to a dozen families of Ukrainian fishermen, in addition to a number of hotels. Russia recognized Ukrainian soverignty over Crimea in 1997, but the status of Tuzla Island was not settled and remained a sorespot in Russia-Ukraine relations. The Sea of Azov ( Crimean Tatar: ''Azaq deñizi''; russian: Азовское море, Azovskoye more; uk, Азовське море, Azovs'ke more) is a sea in Eastern Europe connected to the Black Sea by the narrow (about ) Strait of Kerch, and is sometimes regarded as a northern extension of the Black Sea. The sea is bounded by Russia on the east, by Ukraine on the northwest and southwest. The sea is largely affected by the inflow of the Don, Kuban, and other rivers, which bring sand, silt, and shells, which in turn form numerous bays, limans, and narrow spits. Because of these deposits, the sea bottom is relatively smooth and flat with the depth gradually increasing toward the middle. The Tupolev Tu-22M (russian: Туполев Ту-22М; NATO reporting name: Backfire) is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau in the 1960s. According to some sources, the bomber was believed to be designated Tu-26 at one time. During the Cold War, the Tu-22M was operated by the Soviet Air Forces (VVS) in a missile carrier strategic bombing role, and by the Soviet Naval Aviation (''Aviatsiya Voyenno-Morskogo Flota'', AVMF) in a long-range maritime anti-shipping role. ''Pereyaslav'' is a small reconnaissance ship of the project 1824B (type "Uhlomyer", Muna class by NATO classification), a special purpose ship of the Naval Forces of Ukraine. It was originally named ''GS-13'' under the Hydrographic Service of the Soviet Union Navy, but after the dissolution of the Soviet Union this vessel was released from the Russian military. Project features ''Pereyaslav'' is a type of single-deck self-propelled marine vessel. 1824B Project - special purpose ships - the carriers of underwater vehicles designed on the base of the project of small marine transport of armaments. Russian Destroyer Smetlivy
''Smetlivy'' (russian: Сметливый, italic=yes, lit=Resourceful) was a guided missile destroyer of the Russian Navy. Entering service in 1969, the ship served until 1991 with the fall of the Soviet Union. She returned to service in 1995 after a refit and was made part of the Black Sea Fleet. As of 2011-2020 she was the oldest active destroyer in the world. The ship was decommissioned in 2020 to become a museum ship. Kerch Strait Incident
The Kerch Strait incident was an international incident that occurred on 25 November 2018 in the Kerch Strait, during which the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) coast guard fired upon and captured three Ukrainian Navy vessels after they attempted to transit from the Black Sea into the Sea of Azov through the strait on their way to the port of Mariupol. It was the first time that Russian forces had openly engaged Ukrainian forces during the Russo-Ukrainian War. In 2014, Russia had annexed the nearby Crimean Peninsula, which is predominantly internationally recognised as Ukrainian territory. It later constructed the Crimean Bridge across the strait.
