Hamdi Benani
Hamdi Benani ( ar, حمدي بناني; 1 January 1943 – 21 September 2020) was an Algerian singer and musician. Biography Benani was born in Annaba in 1943. His uncle, , encouraged him to start singing because of the quality of his voice and interpretive ability. He won his first prize while singing at the age of 16. He first gained notoriety in 1963 with the song ''Ya Bahi El Djamel'', which drove him to pursue a career in singing and violin. He brought new life to the Malouf genre of music with the tracks ''Mahbounati'' and ''Adala Ya Adala'', which earned him great public success. This helped him be noticed by senior members of the Malouf singing community, such as Hassen El Annabi, Mohamed Tahar Fergani, and Abdelmoumène Bentobal. Benani was nicknamed "l'ange blanc" (The White Angel) because he was always seen in a white suit with his white violin. Algerian music is virtually synonymous with Raï among foreigners; the musical genre has achieved great popularity in France, Spain and other parts of Europe. For several centuries, Algerian music was dominated by styles inherited from Al-Andalus, eventually forming a unique North African twist on these poetic forms. Zahera Darabid ( ar, زهيرة درابيد ; born May 10, 1980), known by her stage name Zaho (), is an Algerian-Canadian R&B singer. Biography Zahera Darabid was born on May 10, 1980, in Bab Ezzouar, a suburb of the Algerian capital Algiers. At the age of 18, she and her family moved to Montréal, Canada. Her father is an executive and her mother a mathematics professor at l'Institut national d'informatique of France. She has a brother and sister. Career Zaho learned the guitar when she was seven years old, and very quickly learned the répertoire of Francis Cabrel within 10 years. Souad Massi (سعاد ماسي; born August 23, 1972), is an Algerian Berber singer, songwriter and guitarist. She began her career performing in the Kabyle political rock band Atakor, before leaving the country following a series of death threats. In 1999, Massi performed at the ''Femmes d'Algérie'' concert in Paris, which led to a recording contract with Island Records. Rachid Taha ( ar, رشيد طه, Latn, ar, Rashīd Ṭāhā, ; 18 September 1958 – 12 September 2018) was an Algerian singer and activist based in France described as "sonically adventurous". His music was influenced by many different styles including rock, electronic, punk and raï. Early life Taha was born on 18 September 1958 in Sig, Mascara Province, Algeria, although a second source suggests he was born in the Algerian seacoast city of Oran. This town was the "birthplace of raï" music, and 1958 was a key year in the Algerian struggle for independence against French authority. He began listening to Algerian music in the 1960s, including street-style music called chaabi. Additionally, music from the Maghreb region was part of his upbringing. Mohamed Tahar Fergani
Mohamed Tahar Fergani (9 May 1928 – 7 December 2016) was an Algerian singer, violinist and composer, nicknamed the Nightingale of Constantine. Early life He was born in Constantine. Master of the Malouf music of Constantine. Mohamed Tahar Fergani is one of the few singers to interpret compositions on four octaves. In addition to the Malouf, he interprets the Mahjouz (popular Constantinois type that derives from the Malouf), Zjoul (musical genre as old as the Malouf, constantinois) and Hawzi (popular type that derives from the Tlemcen Gharnati). Mohamed Boumerdassi ( ar, ), (March 18, 1936, in Ouled Boumerdès – December 7, 2010, in Thénia) was considered a Grand Master of Bedouin music, Malhun and Algerian music. Life He was born on March 18, 1936, under the name ''Mohamed ben Mustapha al-Boumerdassi'' in the Ouled Boumerdès village within the actual Boumerdès Province. He received his basic education at the '' Zawiyet Sidi Boumerdassi'' in his native village of ''Ouled Boumerdès'', where he learned the Quran. He was a keen admirer of ''Sheikh Ben Ahmed al-Boumerdassi'', then known for his qasida of madih nabawi and poetry praising Muhammad. Lounès Matoub (; ) (January 24, 1956 – June 25, 1998) was an Algerian Kabylian singer, poet, thinker who sparked an intellectual revolution, and mandole player who was an advocate of the Berber cause, human rights, and secularism in Algeria throughout his life. Matoub was reviled by most of the Muslim population in Algeria for his secular and atheist politics along with his militant advocacy of Berber rights, so he was unpopular among both warring parties during the Algerian Civil War. His assassination, claimed by the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), in circumstances which remain unclear, provoked violent riots in Kabylia.
