Linton Railway Station, Palmerston North
Linton railway station was a flag station at Linton in Palmerston North on the North Island Main Trunk in New Zealand. It was opened by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company on 7 July 1885; closed to passengers on 21 January 1971 and closed to goods traffic on 19 November 1972. Only a passing loop remains. History By March 1885 the first of the WMR from Longburn had been built, which included Linton and Tokomaru. It may therefore have opened for goods in July 1885, but there was no regular passenger service for another year. A special train ran from Longburn to Ohau in April 1886. From Monday 2 August 1886 WMR trains started to run between Longburn and Ōtaki. Linton was shown in the time and fare-tables, but only as a flag station. The first through train from Wellington to Palmerston North ran on 30 November 1886. Linton was intended to be a township and raise capital for building the railway. The North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) is the main railway line in the North Island of New Zealand, connecting the capital city Wellington with the country's largest city, Auckland. The line is long, built to the New Zealand rail gauge of and serves the large cities of Palmerston North and Hamilton. Tyer's Electric Train Tablet
Tyer's Electric Train Tablet system is a form of railway signalling for single line railways used in several countries; it was first devised in Great Britain by engineer Edward Tyer after the Thorpe rail accident of 1874, which left 21 people dead. It was used in New Zealand for close to 100 years until June 1994. The system used a hard disk called a ''tablet'', a form of token. The purpose of the system was to use the tablet as a physical guarantee to the traincrew that their train had exclusive right of way on the single-line section. Without it, they could not proceed beyond the section signal which protected entry to the next section of the single line. With advances in electrical locking of the lever frame within the signal box, the tablet instrument also electrically locked the section signal lever. Kakariki Railway Station
Kakariki railway station was a station on the North Island Main Trunk and in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand . It opened in 1879 and closed in 1982. Only a single track now runs through the station site, as the passing loops here and at Halcombe were replaced by the Rangitawa loop, to the south, on 14 December 1983. The new loop is beside Halcombe Road. A 2008 Ministry of Transport "National Freight Demands Study" said, "Current thinking includes . . . a deviation from Kakariki to Porewa to avoid the steep grades into Marton". Mount Maunganui Branch
The Mount Maunganui branch is a short industrial branch line in Tauranga, New Zealand, servicing the eastern side of the Port of Tauranga. It branches from the East Coast Main Trunk at a triangle junction outside Baypark Stadium before running north-west through Mount Maunganui to the port complex. A number of services use the branch daily. Its primary traffic is bulk products - export timber and some timber products from local forests and the Kinlieth and Tasman mills; and coal destined for the Huntly power station and the New Zealand Steel mill at Glenbrook. It is also used for shunts to and from the container handling facilities of the Port of Tauranga, which are located at Sulphur Point on the other side of Tauranga Harbour. Linton Military Camp
Linton Military Camp is the largest New Zealand Army base and is home to the Headquarters 1(NZ) Brigade. It is located just south of Palmerston North. History The land that the present Linton Military Camp stands on was purchased by the Government in 1941 for use as a camp for Territorial and other home defence forces, with the first units taking up occupation in tented accommodation in February 1942, with the first prefabricated huts erected in August 1942. The Tararua Range, often referred to as the Tararua Ranges or Tararua, is one of several mountain ranges in the North Island of New Zealand.
