The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office is a county-level police agency operating in Lincoln County, Nebraska. Office holders 19th and early 20th century The office of sheriff in Nebraska is an elected one. The first sheriff elected in Lincoln County was O. O. Austin, elected at Cottonwood Springs by 21 voters in October 1867. Much of the first sheriff's two-year term was spent with the newly incorporated Lincoln County's first court case, ''State of Nebraska vs. John Burley''. A few of the early sheriffs were professional lawmen. Lincoln County War
The Lincoln County War was an Old West conflict between rival factions which began in 1878 in Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, the predecessor of the state of New Mexico, and continued until 1881. The feud became famous because of the participation of William H. Bonney (" Billy the Kid"). Other notable participants included Sheriff William J. Brady, cattle rancher John Chisum, lawyer and businessman Alexander McSween, James Dolan and Lawrence Murphy. The conflict began between two factions competing for profits from dry goods and cattle interests in the county. The older, established faction was dominated by James Dolan, who operated a dry goods monopoly through a general store referred to locally as "The House". English-born John Tunstall and his business partner Alexander McSween opened a competing store in 1876, with backing from established cattleman John Chisum. "Lincoln County" is a 1968 song by British musician Dave Davies, who is best known as a guitarist for the rock band the Kinks. It was his third single. Recording "Lincoln County" was recorded around the sessions of '' The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society'', and, like his previous two singles, "Death of a Clown" and " Susannah's Still Alive", featured all of the members of the Kinks participating. Release Dave Davies' third solo 45 had a checkered history: two release dates came and went before it was released. Contrary to popular belief, the single was not released and withdrawn, although a handful of promo copies were date stamped with the previous release dates. The delays were partly down to the record label, Pye Records, not wanting competing Kinks product and the Kinks' uncertainty of what their next single would be. Lincoln County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,463. Its county seat is Hamlin. The county was created in 1867 and named for Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln County is part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Lincoln County was created by an act of the West Virginia Legislature on February 23, 1867, from parts of Boone, Cabell, Kanawha and Putnam counties. By 1869, the county had returned much of its Putnam County territory and absorbed the northern portion of Logan County and a portion of Wayne County. Lincoln County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, its population was 50,395. The county seat is Newport.
