Ladies Of The Maccabees
The Ladies of the Maccabees (L.O.T.M.) (renamed in 1892, Ladies of the Modern Maccabees (L.O.T.M.M.); in 1915, Women's Benefit Association; in 1966, North American Benefit Association) was the female auxiliary of the Knights of the Maccabees. It was the first fraternal benefit society operated exclusively by women. This was an insurance benefit society which grew to 80,000 members by 1913 and had paid out over $50 million in endowment benefits. The Ladies of the Maccabees Building, in Port Huron, Michigan was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Early history On March 25, 1886, nine ladies met at the home of Adelphia Grace Ward (aka Mother of the Order, Past Great Commander) to establish the order of the Ladies of the Maccabees (L.O.T.M.). Lillian Hollister
Lillian Hollister (September 8, 1853 – August 4, 1911) was an American temperance and church worker. Hollister served as Supreme Commander of the Ladies of the Maccabees. Early years and education Lillian Bates was born in Milford, Michigan, September 8, 1853. Her father, Phineas Bates. He was a well-to-do farmer of Oakland County, Michigan, having emigrated from New York at an early day. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church and an earnest anti-slavery man. Her father's family were all musicians. Hollister was one of a family of six children. She was the youngest but one of three brothers and three sisters, four of whom became teachers. At the age of four and a half years, she began her schoolgirl days, walking one and a half miles to the district schoolhouse. Marion Babcock Baxter (April 12, 1850 – November 18, 1910) was an American lecturer and author. At twenty years of age, she delivered her first public address at Jonesville, Michigan. It attracted wide and favorable attention, and fixed her vocation as a lecturer. From that time, she was constantly before the public, speaking to large audiences in all parts of the country, temperance and women's suffrage generally being her theme, but also social and political relations of society. Baxter served as president of Wayside Mission Hospital, located on the good ship ''Idaho'', a side-wheel steamer built in 1860 for the Columbia River business. Bina West Miller (1867-1954) was an American businesswoman. She was a leader of the Ladies of the Maccabees. Biography Sabina ("Bina") M. West was born in 1867, in Columbus Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. Beginning her career as a teacher at Capac High School, Miller became a member of the Knights of the Maccabees. She began providing life insurance to women by working with the Maccabees, and helped found the Woman's Benefit Association of the Maccabees. Miller founded one of the first organizations to offer life insurance to women with $500 of borrowed money. She heavily promoted the group, and within a decade grew membership to 100,000 women. The company she founded is today the Woman's Life Insurance Society, located in Port Huron, Michigan. The Ladies of the Maccabees Building is a fraternal organization building, located at 901 Huron Avenue in Port Huron, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. History The Knights of the Maccabees, a fraternal organization, was organized in 1878, and re-organized in 1881 as the "Knights of the Modern Maccabees". The Ladies of the Maccabees (L.O.T.M.) were organized in 1886 as an auxiliary of the organization. The Ladies of the Modern Maccabees (L.O.T.M.M.) grew over the next decade, and severed ties with the men's organization in 1902. In 1906, the organization hired architect George L. Harvey to design this building for use as their headquarters. By 1912, the order had over 51,000 members. In 1926, the Ladies of the Maccabees merged with the men, with the combined organization known simply as the Maccabees.
