Lovers' Isle
Lovers' Isle is an islet in Southwest Penang Island District, Penang, Malaysia, located off the northern coast of Penang Island. Located off Batu Ferringhi, a suburb of the city of George Town, this uninhabited rocky outcrop was where the first European sailors to reach what is now Penang arrived in the 16th century. Etymology The isle was once named ''Batu Ferringhi'' ( English: Portuguese Rock) and has lent its name to the now popular tourist destination of Batu Ferringhi, a suburb of George Town. In the 16th century, Portuguese sailors landed at the rock to obtain fresh water from the nearby streams. At the time, the Malay word '' Ferringhi'', which was in turn derived from the Arabic ''ferringi'', was originally used to denote a person of Portuguese descent. Urban legend has it that Lovers' Isle was named as such after a couple, each of a different ethnicity, committed suicide at this outcrop. Batu Ferringhi
Batu Ferringhi is a suburb of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Located along the northern coast of Penang Island and about northwest of the city centre, it is the prime beach destination in Penang among locals and tourists. To cater to the influx of tourists, several major high-rise hotels have been established along the stretch of beaches. The beach resorts along Batu Ferringhi also offer various water sport activities, such as parasailing. Southwest Penang Island District
The Southwest District is a district in George Town within the Malaysian state of Penang. The district covers the southwestern half of Penang Island and borders the Northeast District. Both districts fall under the jurisdiction of the Penang Island City Council. History In 1786, the British East India Company had taken control of Penang Island, establishing the city of George Town at the island's northeastern tip. For several decades since, the island was governed directly from George Town, with no administrative divisions on the island. In 1888, a District and Land Office was established at Balik Pulau at the southwest of the island. Thus, the Southwest District was created, effectively dividing the island into two districts.
