Lithuanian Women's Association
The Lithuanian Women's Association ( lt, Lietuvos moterų susivienijimas) was the first Lithuanian women's organization. It was active during the Russian Revolution of 1905 and campaigned for women's suffrage and for autonomy of Lithuania within the Russian Empire. Establishment In the context of the revolution, Lithuanian women became more active. Both Lithuanian political parties, Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and Lithuanian Democratic Party, supported women's suffrage and had women members. On 13 June 1905, about 50 women gathered in Zubovai Palace in Šiauliai to discuss women's situation in Lithuania. They discussed women's movements in Poland and Russia and debated whether to join them or create a separate organization. Kovno Governorate
Kovno Governorate ( rus, Ковенская губеpния, r=Kovenskaya guberniya; lt, Kauno gubernija) or Governorate of Kaunas was a governorate ('' guberniya'') of the Russian Empire. Its capital was Kaunas (Kovno in Russian). It was formed on 18 December 1842 by Tsar Nicholas I from the western part of Vilna Governorate, and the order was carried out on 1 July 1843. Founded in 1908, it was the largest women's organization in interwar Lithuania. It was disestablished after the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in 1940. In 1907, the First Congress of Lithuanian Women took place in Kaunas. On the congress it was decided that a national women's organisation should be founded. However, due to the split between Catholic and liberal women, the plan could not be realised, and instead they founded separate women's organisations instead. The Lithuanian Women's Union ( lt, Lietuvos moterų sąjunga or LMS) was a women's organization active in Lithuania from 1922 to 1933. The First Congress of Lithuanian Women held in 1907 called for the establishment of the union, but it was not accomplished due to conflicts between Catholic clergy and socialists. The union was officially established in 1922 and initially chaired by Felicija Bortkevičienė. The union was supported by the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and the Peasant Union, opponents of the authoritarian President Antanas Smetona who came to power in 1926. Therefore, it was in opposition to the government-sponsored Lithuanian Women's Council. The union was officially closed on 10 June 1935. Kaunas
Kaunas (; ; also see other names) is the second-largest city in Lithuania after Vilnius and an important centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas was the largest city and the centre of a county in the Duchy of Trakai of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Trakai Palatinate since 1413. First Congress Of Lithuanian Women
The First Congress of Lithuanian Women ( lt, Pirmasis lietuvių moterų suvažiavimas) took place on in Kaunas (then part of the Russian Empire, now Lithuania). It was organized by Catholic priests in preparation for the October 1907 election to the third State Duma but discussed only cultural and economic issues. The organizers attempted to invite representatives of different social classes and political affiliations leading to disagreements between socialists and Catholic clergy, and between educated intellectuals and less educated villagers. The congress resolved to establish the Lithuanian Women's Union. However, disagreements between the liberals and the Catholics led to splintering of the women's movement and to the establishment of the Association of Lithuanian Catholic Women in January 1908. Ona Mašiotienė
Ona Mašiotienė ''née'' Brazauskaitė (; 9 September 1883 – 29 December 1949) was a Lithuanian teacher and principal, women's rights activist and writer. She helped found the Lithuanian Women's Association, the first women's rights organization in the country, and lectured on the need for equality of men and women. Pressing for both women's rights and Lithuania's independence, she served as a member of different societies and a delegate to several political conferences and assemblies. As a teacher, she organized the first Lithuanian-language girls' gymnasium in Vilnius and was the principal of a secondary school in Kaunas for over a decade. Equality before the law, also known as equality under the law, equality in the eyes of the law, legal equality, or legal egalitarianism, is the principle that all people must be equally protected by the law. The principle requires a systematic rule of law that observes due process to provide equal justice, and requires equal protection ensuring that no individual nor group of individuals be privileged over others by the law.
