Surfing
Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found on ocean shores, but can also be found as standing waves in the open ocean, in lakes, in rivers in the form of a tidal bore, or wave pools. Surfing includes all forms of wave-riding using a board, regardless of the stance. There are several types of boards. The Moche of Peru would often surf on reed craft, while the native peoples of the Pacific surfed waves on alaia, paipo, and other such watercraft. Ancient cultures often surfed on their belly and knees, while modern-day surfing is most often ''stand-up surfing'', in which a surfer rides a wave while standing on a surfboard. Shane Beschen
Shane Beschen (born February 18, 1972) is a California (USA) born professional surfer. Biography and career Shane Beschen was born on February 18, 1972 to Mike and Sue Beschen. His mother is an elementary school teacher, and his brother Gavin is a professional surfer as well. At 16 years old, Beschen signed his first sponsorship deal and started to tour as a pro surfer. His mother recalled he would attend school for a couple of weeks, and then take off for a couple of weeks, taking "independent-study contracts", and doing his homework while flying to his events. By 1998, he had won more than $250,000 in competitions. In 1996, at Kirra, Beschen became the first and only professional surfer to score three perfect 10 point rides for a total 30 out of 30 ASP three-wave scoring system. Corky Carroll
Corky Carroll (born September 29, 1947) is a professional American surfer and is considered a pioneer in the sport by becoming the first real professional surfer as well as being the first to make paid endorsements. Life and career Carroll started his career in 1959 at a very early age and by the time he retired in 1972, he was only 24 years old. From 1966-1970 he won the United States Surfing Championship and also won the International Surfing Championship three times. Altogether, Carroll won over 100 surfing competitions. After his surfing career, he became a musician and recorded nine albums along with writing several books on surfing. He subsequently opened a surfing school in California and designed surf boards. He frequently serves as the color commentator for world surfing events such as the annual competition in Huntington Beach, and pens a column in the Orange County Register. Ian Cairns
Ian Cairns (born 24 July 1952 in Kew, Victoria) is a former champion surfer who was also influential in establishing the world professional surfing circuit and particularly the World championship tour (WCT) surfing, World Championship Tour. He was described as "the premier "power" surfer of his era [who] dominated the North Shore (Oahu), North Shore during the mid to late-seventies". He moved to Western Australia with his family from Victoria in early 1967, to Perth, Western Australia, Perth's western suburbs, attending Shenton College, Swanbourne Senior High School. Taj Burrow
Taj Burrow (born 2 June 1978) is an Australian retired professional surfer. Taj retired from the WSL World Tour in June 2016 where he left a legacy of power and impressive surfing. Early life Burrow was born in Yallingup, Western Australia, Australia to American parents and began surfing at age 7. Career In 1998 he qualified for the ASP World Tour at the age of 18 years, becoming the youngest surfer to ever win a national title. Burrow had already earned a place on the world tour a year earlier, but he turned it down stating that, as a 17-year-old, he was "too young to do the tour full-on". Pam Burridge
Pam Burridge (born 26 July 1965) is an Australian surfer and one of the pioneers of women’s surfing in Australia. Born in Sydney, she entered her first surfing competition in 1977, proceeding to win various regional and national titles in the following years. Burridge began competing internationally in 1981, and went on to win the women's ASP World Tour in 1990. She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1995, and given a place on Huntington Beach's Surfing Walk of Fame in 2017. After a hiatus from 1993 to 1996, Burridge continued surfing competitively until 1999 and now runs a surf school on the south coast of New South Wales. Bud Browne
Bud Browne (July 12, 1912 – July 25, 2008) was an American early pioneer surf film maker. He was the first filmmaker to show surf movies commercially. Browne was captain of the swim team at the University of Southern California in 1933. He learned to surf during his time in Venice, California. He began filming surfing in the 1940s while visiting Hawaii. Early life Bud Browne was born in Newtonville, Massachusetts on July 14, 1912 and died in San Luis Obispo, California on July 25, 2008. He moved to Los Angeles in 1931 and attended the University of Southern California, competing in collegiate swimming and became the captain of the team. In 1938, after graduating from the University, Browne obtained a job as a life guard. His time in this new occupation however, was short lived because he was soon enlisted into the Navy during World War II. While at war, he taught many Marines how to swim. A pop and hip-hop-influenced R&B musician who works in a variety of genres, he has been called the " King of R&B" by some of his contemporaries. Wendy Botha (born 22 August 1965) is a four-time world surfing champion. She won her first title as a South African citizen in 1987, then she became an Australian citizen and won three more titles in 1989, 1991, and 1992.
