4FRNT Skis is an independent brand of alpine ski equipment that helped to pioneer the development of the freeskiing movement. 4FRNT introduced the model of a skier-owned and operated ski company to the sport. Products manufactured by 4FRNT include skis, ski pole, poles, ski binding, bindings, and accessories. History 4FRNT Skis was founded by professional skier Matt Sterbenz in 2002 in a garage in Truckee, CA and moved to a factory in 2003. In 2004 4FRNT products were unveiled at the Las Vegas Valley, Las Vegas SIA show, the company's first park ski went into production. 4FRNT moved to a new headquarters in Salt Lake City in 2005. Candide Thovex
Candide Thovex (born 22 May 1982) is a French professional skier, filmmaker and entrepreneur. He is the older brother of snowboarder Mirabelle Thovex. Youth Candide Thovex was born in Annecy, in the Haute-Savoie area of France, and grew up in the village of La Clusaz. He learned to ski at the age of 2 in the Aravis region of the French Alps. He was 14 when he won his first French National Junior Championships in the mogul division. Kneissl is a manufacturer of handmade skis, biking and tennis equipment and apparel, based in Kufstein, Tyrol, Austria. History To 1990 The Kneissl Company was founded as a wheel factory in 1861. The first skis were produced in 1919. In the 1960s, Kneissl developed the first plastic skis featuring a wood core. Ski racer Karl Schranz made the Kneissl White Star skis one of the most sought after in the world. In the seventies, the company expanded into cross-country ski and tennis racquet production. Howard Head (July 31, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – March 3, 1991) was an American aeronautical engineer who is credited with the invention of the first commercially successful aluminum laminate skis and the oversized tennis racket. Head founded the ski (and later tennis racquet)-making firm, Head, in 1950. Later, he became chairman of Prince Manufacturing Inc. The U.S. patents for the laminate skis and oversized tennis racket are in the name of Howard Head. He graduated from Harvard College in 1936. Head Standard
The Head Standard was Howard Head's first successful ski design, and arguably the first modern downhill ski. The Standard used composite construction, with a plywood core sandwiched between aluminum outer skins, steel edges tapering into the core, and a hard plastic base, sidewalls and topsheet. The only major changes in ski materials since the Standard are the use of fibreglass structural layers in place of (or in addition to) the aluminum layers, and substitution of expanded plastic foam for the wooden core. The Standard was flexible in length and stiff in torsion, which allowed it to be easily turned while still holding a good edge. This combination was so impressive that it became known as "The Cheater" for the way it allowed beginners to turn like pros.
