Institut D'Estudis Catalans
The Institute for Catalan Studies ( ca, Institut d'Estudis Catalans, ), also known by the acronym and initialism, acronym IEC, is an academic institution which seeks to undertake research and study into "all elements of Catalan culture". It is based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. IEC The IEC is known principally for its work in standardizing the Catalan language. The Institute's current president is Joandomènec Ros Aragonès, elected to the office for four years in 2013 and to a second term in 2017, following Salvador Giner, elected to the office for four years in 2005 and to a second term in 2009. The IEC is based in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, and the second largest city in Spain. Enric Prat de la Riba, who was to become the first President of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya, Commonwealth of Catalonia, signed the founding document of the Institute, as president of the Provincial Deputation of Barcelona on June 17, 1907. Pilar Bayer Isant (born 1946) is a Spanish mathematician specializing in number theory. She is a professor emerita in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Barcelona. Education and career Bayer was born in Barcelona on February 13, 1946. Before becoming a mathematician, she was certified as a piano teacher by the Municipal Conservatory of Barcelona in 1967. She graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1968, and completed her Ph.D. there in 1975. Her dissertation, ''Extensiones maximales de un cuerpo global en las que un divisor primo descompone completamente'', was jointly supervised by Rafael Mallol Balmaña and Jürgen Neukirch. She was one of the first two women to earn a Ph.D. from the university; the other was her high school teacher. She was an assistant at Universität Regensburg from 1977 to 1980. Joan Bastardas I Parera
Joan Bastardas i Parera (Barcelona, 1919-2009) was a Spanish Latinist and Romance philologist, the son of the lawyer and politician Albert Bastardas i Sampere. He studied at the University of Barcelona, with Marià Bassols de Climent, and wrote a PhD dissertation on Medieval Latin syntax, for which he received the Antonio de Nebrija Prize (1951). He was also indirectly a student of the Swedish Latinist Dag Norberg. He was first appointed lecturer, then assistant (1967), and finally obtained a chair in Latin Philology (1976) at the University of Barcelona. His research was devoted to Medieval Latin (particularly Hispanic Medieval Latin) and to preliterary Catalan. He was director (1960-1985) of the ''Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis Cataloniae'', a dictionary of the Medieval Latin of Catalonia, a research project which is part of the global project ''Novum Glossarium Mediae Latinitatis'' of the Union Académique Internationale.
