The following is a chronological list of mayors of Hamburg, a city-state in Germany. The mayors are the head of the city-state, part of the government of Hamburg. Since 1861, according to the Constitution of Hamburg, constitution of 28 September 1860, the state has been governed by the ten-member Senate of Hamburg, Senate, which had previously been called the ''council'' (in the German language of that time: ''Rath''). It is headed by the first mayor of Hamburg (German title: ''Erster Bürgermeister der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg'') as the president of the Senate. The deputy is the second mayor. For much of its history, Hamburg was a free imperial city and later a sovereign state; the position of First Mayor historically was equivalent to that of a sovereign head of state. Coat Of Arms Of Hamburg
The coat of arms of Hamburg, along with the flag of Hamburg, is regulated by the constitution of Hamburg and law. The colors of Hamburg are white and red. One of the oldest versions of the castle is found on a seal in 1241. Description All coat of arms show a castle with three towers. The middle tower shows a cross on top. It is believed that the so-called Marian stars on top of the two side-towers and the cross recalls the fact that Hamburg used to be an archbishopric. The towers and the walls with their pinnacles and the closed gate symbolized the determination of the town to defend itself. Ditmar Koel
Ditmar Koel, also ''Dithmar Koel'', ''Ditmar Kohl'' or ''Dietmar Koehl'' (born around 1500, died 22 September 1563 in Hamburg), was a Captain, successful pirate hunter and Mayor of Hamburg. Biography In 1525 Koel was commander of one of four ships of the fleet of Admiral Simon Parseval. 7 October he came into sea battle with the fleet of the pirate Claus Kniphoff. After 8 hours he managed to take the ship ''Gallion''. He brought the pirates and the loot to Hamburg, and was 1527 elected to ''Ratsherr'' (councilman). Koel promoted the Reformation and initiated the reformation of the Hansatown. In 1536, as Admiral for a defence fleet, he stopped a raid from Count Palatine Friedrich von Hadeln.
