List Of Mayors Of Birmingham, Alabama
The office of mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, United States, was established with the incorporation of the city in 1871. Robert Henley was appointed by Governor of Alabama, Governor Robert B. Lindsay to a two-year term. Until 1910, the Mayor presided over an ever-expanding Board of Aldermen who generally campaigned on the same ticket. Progressive reformers lobbied for a change in the form of government that year, resulting in the creation of a five-member Board of Commissioners (later reduced to three members). The President of the Commission, though not formally holding the title, was widely acknowledged as "Mayor" under that system. As Birmingham grew, it eventually became the county seat of Jefferson County. Cooper Green was an American politician who served as President of the Birmingham City Commission (mayor of Birmingham, Alabama), President of the Jefferson County, Alabama County Commission, a member of the Alabama House of Representatives, and postmaster of Birmingham, Alabama. He also served as president of the United States Conference of Mayors. Early life Green was born in North Birmingham. Green was the son of Charles Martin Green, a real estate promoter involved in developing much of North Birmingham and Tarrant, Alabama. Nathaniel A. Barrett (1861-1933) was an American physician and politician. He was born on January 16, 1861, in Lawrence County, Alabama, to David B. Barrett and Charlotte Wilson Aldridge Barrett. His father was a carpenter and contractor. Barrett attended public schools in Lawrence County and a private school run by C.G. Lynch. He began to study medicine under Dr. C.A. Crow at Moulton, then spent one year in the medical department of the University of Alabama and later attended the medical department of Vanderbilt University, where he earned an M.D. in 1886. Upon getting his degree, Barrett began practicing in Danville, Alabama. There, he served as president as the Morgan County Medical Society and also as chairman of the county democratic executive committee.
