City Of Albany
The City of Albany is a local government area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about south-southeast of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It covers an area of , including the Greater Albany metropolitan area and the Port of Albany, as well as the surrounding agricultural district and some national parks. The City of Albany had a population of over 36,000 at the 2016 census. History The Municipality of Albany was gazetted in 1871. It was initially headed by a chairman, with William Finlay becoming the first mayor in 1885. The Albany Road Board was gazetted in 1896. On 1 July 1961, they became respectively the Town of Albany and Shire of Albany councils following changes to the Local Government Act. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly is elected from 59 single-member electoral districts. These districts are often referred to as ''electorates'' or ''seats''. The ''Electoral Distribution Act 1947'' requires regular review of electoral boundaries, in order to keep the relative size of electorates within certain limits. Electoral boundaries are determined by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. The Heritage Council of Western Australia is the Government of Western Australia agency created to identify, conserve and promote places of cultural heritage significance in the state. Prior to its creation, considerable variance in policy and political controversies arose over heritage issues in Western Australia, such as the Barracks Arch and the demolition of buildings in the Perth central business district. It was preceded by the Western Australian Heritage Committee, which had been heavily involved in the 1988 Australian Bicentenary, and the setting up of the W.A. Heritage Trails Network. Charles Wittenoom
Charles Horne Wittenoon (6 December 1879 – 18 September 1969) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Council for twelve years. Born in Geraldton, Western Australia on 6 December 1879, he was the son of squatter and station agent Sir Edward Wittenoom, and a nephew of Frank Wittenoom, after whom the town of Wittenoom is named. He was educated at High School (now Hale School) in Perth, then went to England to complete his studies at Malvern College and the Royal School of Mines in London. On returning to Western Australia he became manager of Central and West Boulder Mines at Kalgoorlie. By 1909 he was owner of ''Muralgarra Station'' at Yalgoo. On 9 June 1909 he married Bessie Sholl, daughter of Robert Sholl; they had one son and two daughters. Wittenoom was widowed in October 1919. Herbert Robinson (Western Australian Politician)
Herbert Robinson (29 December 1876 – 2 May 1919) was an Australian politician who was a Nationalist member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1917 until his death, representing the seat of Albany. Robinson was born in Red Hill, Victoria, to Irish parents, Margaret (née Thomson) and John Robinson. His family moved to Albany, Western Australia, in June 1878, where he spent his early childhood. He and his older brother, Robert Thomson Robinson (also a future MP), were both sent to Adelaide to be educated, attending Prince Alfred College. After leaving school, Robinson returned to Albany to work for Drew Robinson & Co., his father's department store. He eventually became a junior partner in the store. In November 1912, Robinson was elected Mayor of Albany, serving until November 1915.
