Naval Hospital Oakland, also known as Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, was a United States Navy, U.S. naval hospital located in Oakland, California that opened during World War II (1942) and closed in 1996 as part of the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure program. The site is bordered on three sides by Mountain Boulevard and Keller Avenue in the city's Oak Knoll section; its map coordinates are . Livermore Sanitarium was a private sanitarium and psychiatric hospital, located in Livermore, California, in operation from 1894 until 1965. The facility specialized the treatment and research of alcoholism and mental disorders. During this time period the Livermore Valley was considered an ideal climate for optimizing one's health. History The Livermore Sanitarium was founded by Dr. John W. Robertson, he had previously worked at Napa State Hospital in the alcohol treatment clinic. A long-term acute care hospital (LTACH), also known as a long-term care hospital (LTCH), is a hospital specializing in treating patients requiring extended hospitalization. Hospitals specializing in long-term care have existed for decades in the form of sanatoriums for patients with tuberculosis and other chronic diseases. The modern hospital known as an LTACH came into existence as a result of the Medicare, Medicaid, and SCHIP Balanced Budget Refinement Act of 1999.
