In India, a governor is the constitutional head of each of the twenty-eight states. The governor is appointed by the President of India for a term of five years, and holds office at the President's pleasure. The governor is ''de jure'' head of the state government; all its executive actions are taken in the governor's name. However, the governor must act on the advice of the popularly elected council of ministers, headed by the chief minister, who thus hold '' de facto'' executive authority at the state-level. The Constitution of India also empowers the governor to act upon their own discretion, such as the ability to appoint or dismiss a ministry, recommend President's rule, or reserve bills for the President's assent. Padmaja Naidu
Padmaja Naidu (17 November 1900 – 2 May 1975) was an Indian freedom fighter and politician who was the 4th Governor of West Bengal from 3 November 1956 to 1 June 1967. She was the daughter of Sarojini Naidu. Early life Padmaja Naidu was born in Hyderabad to a Telugu Balija father and a Bengali Brahmin mother. Her mother was the poet and Indian freedom fighter, Sarojini Naidu. Her father Mutyala Govindrajulu Naidu was a physician. She had four siblings, Jayasurya, Leelamani, Nilawar and Randheer. Political career At the age of 21, she co-founded the Indian National Congress in the Nizam ruled princely state of Hyderabad. She was jailed for taking part in the " Quit India" movement in 1942. Sharada Mukherjee (24 February 1919–2007) was an Indian socialite and politician who was member of Lok Sabha in 1960s, and later served as Governor of the states of Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Biography Sharada was born into a Maharashtrian family as Sharada Pandit on 24 February 1919. Her paternal uncle Ranjit S Pandit was married to Vijayalakshmi Pandit, India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's sister. Her mother Saraswatibai Pandit's sister was legendary actress and film personality Durga Khote. She met Subroto Mukerjee, who became the first Indian Air Chief Marshal later and belonged to one of the most distinguished families of Bengal in 1937 in Mumbai. Vijay Lakshmi Pandit (''née'' Swarup Nehru; 18 August 1900 – 1 December 1990) was an Indian freedom fighter, diplomat and politician. She served as the 8th President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1953 to 1954, the first woman and the only Indian to have been appointed to this post. She was also the 3rd Governor of Maharashtra from 1962 to 1964. Noted for her participation in the Indian independence movement, she was jailed several times during the movement. The United Provinces (UP) was a province of British Raj, British India and, subsequently, independent India. Droupadi Murmu (born Durgi Biranchi Tudu; 20 June 1958) is an Indian politician who has been serving as the president of India since 2022. She won the 2022 presidential election as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. Pratibha Devisingh Patil (born 19 December 1934), also known as Pratibha Patil Shekhawat, is an Indian politician and lawyer who served as the president of India from 2007 to 2012. She was the first woman to become the president of India. A member of the Indian National Congress, she also served as the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007, and was a member of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996.
