List Of Department Stores Converted To Macy's
This is a list of department stores converted to Macy's and sister brand Bloomingdale's by way of mergers and acquisitions. Macy's became a national brand through these conversions, and replaced many regional department stores with local heritage throughout the United States. The 2005 acquisition of The May Department Stores Company by Macy's parent Federated Department Stores (present-day Macy's, Inc.) was the largest of these transactions, and resulted in 11 regional brands becoming defunct in 2006. The table below includes department stores that were directly converted to Macy's and brands subjected to previous conversions that were ultimately converted to Macy's. Davison's
Davison's was an American department store chain founded in 1891 in Atlanta, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. It was a local institution, and competed with Rich's (department store), Rich's in the Atlanta market. Davison's expanded throughout Georgia and South Carolina. It was acquired by Macy's in 1925, and ultimately converted to Macy's in 1985. May Company California
May Company California was an American department store chain founded in 1881 as A. Hamburger & Sons by Asher Hamburger. It was renamed after its acquisition by The May Department Stores Company in 1923. Its flagship store and headquarters were located in Los Angeles, and operated throughout Southern California. It is well-known for its flagship store in downtown Los Angeles and branch store at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, the latter of which has been featured in several vintage films. The 1926 garage building at 9th Stret and Hill Street was one of the first parking structures in the United States, and is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. Goldwater's
Goldwater's Department Store was a department store chain based in Phoenix, Arizona. History Michael Goldwater, a Polish Jewish immigrant and the grandfather of U.S. Senator and 1964 presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, established a trading post in 1860 in Gila City, Arizona Territory. In 1872, he moved to Phoenix where he opened a new store. The Phoenix store did poorly and was closed a short time later. After this failed venture, he opened M. Goldwater & Bros. Store in Prescott, which did well. In 1892, the Phoenix store was reopened under the management of Michael's son Baron Goldwater and performed well. Baron managed the chain along with his two brothers Henry and Morris. Baron's son Robert W. Goldwater went on to manage the chain and during this time Goldwater's expanded to open a store at Park Central in 1956. Goldsmith's
Goldsmith's was a department store founded in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1870 by German immigrant brothers Jacob and Isaac Goldsmith. It grew into a chain largely located in the Memphis metropolitan area, until 2005, when the nameplate was eliminated and replaced by Macy's. Goldsmith's stores were subsequently folded into Federated's Macy's Central division, reorganized into Macy's South, and today into a differently configured Macy's Central, the current division encompassing the stores. In 1870, with a $500 (~$ in ) investment, the Goldsmith brothers opened a dry goods store at 163 Beale Street. The store relocated in 1895 to a larger facility at 125 Main, which it occupied through most of the 20th century. Stern's was a regional department store chain serving the U.S. states of New York and New Jersey. The chain was in business for more than 130 years. In 2001, Stern's parent company Federated Department Stores opted to retire the Stern's brand. Most of the stores were immediately converted to Stern's corporate sibling Macy's, some were liquidated and reopened as Bloomingdale's, and others were closed. Foley's was a regional chain of department stores owned by Federated Department Stores (1947–1988, 2005–2006), later owned by May Department Stores (1988–2005) and headquartered in Downtown Houston, Texas. On August 30, 2005, the division was dissolved and operation of the stores was assumed by Federated's Macy's West and Macy's South divisions. Foley's operated stores in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana.
