Cities in Vietnam are identified by the government as settlements with considerable area and population that play important roles vis-a-vis politics, economy and culture. Status of cities falls into four categories: special, first class (), second class (), and third class (). Municipalities Centrally controlled cities (''thành phố trực thuộc trung ương'') or municipalities are cities with significant importance in terms of the politics, economy and culture of Vietnam that are under direct control of the Vietnamese Central government. Thủ Đức ʰu˨˩˦:ɗɨk˧˥is a sub-municipality in Ho Chi Minh City of the Southestern region of Vietnam. History The oldest name what was recorded in this area was Ngãi An (義安), a district-level administrative unit has existed since the Nguyễn lords. Haiphong or Hai Phong (, ) is the third-largest city in Vietnam and is the principal port city of the Red River Delta. Hoa Lư is a city in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. It is the capital of Ninh Bình Province. Geography Hoa Lư Ancient Capital is located in Trường Yên Commune ( vi). Huế () is a former Provincial city (Vietnam), provincial city of Vietnam. The city was the capital of Thừa Thiên Huế province in the North Central Coast region of Vietnam, located near the center of Vietnam.
