City Of West Torrens
The City of West Torrens is a local government area in the western suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. Since the 1970s, the area was mainly home to many open spaces and parks, however after the mid-1990s (1993–1995) the LGA became more residential. History It was established on 7 July 1853 as the District Council of West Torrens, which was one of the first local governments to be formed in South Australia following the passage of the ''District Councils Act 1852''. It became smaller over time as a number of areas within the original boundaries split off to form new municipalities: the Holdfast Bay area became part of the new Corporate Town of Glenelg on 23 August 1855, the Thebarton area seceded as the Corporate Town of Thebarton on 8 February 1883, and the West Beach area seceded as part of the Corporate Town of Henley and Grange on 4 December 1915. Appila, South Australia
Appila (earlier known as Yarrowie) is a locality in the Mid North of South Australia east of the lower Flinders Ranges. It occupies much of the eastern half of the Hundred of Appila and a strip on the western side of the adjacent Hundred of Tarcowie. History The town of Yarrowie (an Aboriginal word for hunting ground) was established in 1872 following the proclamation of the Strangways Land Act for closer settlement in 1869. The town grew quickly as settlers moved to the area, and by the 1880s it had two hotels, four blacksmiths, three carpenters, Protestant, Catholic and government schools, a post office and telegraph station as well as other stores. In 1877 the name was changed to Appila-Yarrowie then later to just Appila to remove confusion with other towns including Yarcowie, Tarcowie, Terowie, Caltowie and Willowie. Angaston, South Australia
Angaston is a town on the eastern side of the Barossa Valley in South Australia, 77 km northeast of Adelaide. Its elevation is 347 m, one of the highest points in the valley, and has an average rainfall of 561 mm. Angaston was originally known as ''German Pass'', but was later renamed after the politician, banker and pastoralist George Fife Angas, who settled in the area in the 1850s. Andrews, South Australia
Andrews is a rural locality in the Northern Areas Council of South Australia, located on the Hill River. Its boundaries were formalised in April 2001 for the long established name for the area. The district, which is primarily dedicated to primary production, mainly grain farming, is in the Spalding Ward of the council. The township has bulk grain handling and storage facilities as well as limited sporting and community facilities. The Hill River Road and the Hill River run north–south through the locality, while Andrews Road runs east–west, connecting the Goyder Highway with RM Williams Way. In the , the population of Andrews was too low to separately report; it was included in that of adjacent Spalding. American River is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located on the western shore of Eastern Cove (South Australia), Eastern Cove on Kangaroo Island. History The area now known as American River was first visited by Europeans in 1802 when Matthew Flinders landed to survey this part of Kangaroo Island. In 1803, a group of American sealers camped for four months in the area. They arrived on the brig and built their own 35 ton schooner ''Independence (schooner), Independence'' from local timber. Aldgate, South Australia
Aldgate is a South Australian village and a suburb of Adelaide, located south-east of the Adelaide city centre, in the Adelaide Hills. History An inn called the Aldgate Pump was opened by Richard D. Hawkins, a well-known publican, in 1864. Hawkins, who had emigrated from London, England, to the Province of South Australia in 1842, already owned several hotels, including the nearby Crafers Inn in present-day Crafers. The pump which Hawkins had installed outside the hotel (and which gave the hotel its name) became a popular place to water the horses and bullock teams which passed through the area, and by 1870, a small settlement had been established. Hawkins claimed at that time that some 60,000 people a year passed through the hotel's doors. The hotel became quite famous, at one point being described as "one of the best decorated of its kind in the colony" with "magnificent chandeliers". Alford is a settlement in South Australia. Alford is in the Hundred of Tickera, northern Yorke Peninsula, about midway between the towns of Kadina and Port Broughton. The natural landform is undulating fertile plains, which often feature limestone and dunes. Founded on the agricultural industry, which surrounds the township, most of the original mallee scrub vegetation has been cleared for highly productive broad-acre wheat and barley farming, plus grazing and mixed farming.
