Siddeley Puma
The Siddeley Puma is a British aero engine developed towards the end of World War I and produced by Siddeley-Deasy. The first Puma engines left the production lines of Siddeley-Deasy in Coventry in August 1917, production continued until December 1918. In operational service, the engine was unreliable and failed to deliver its rated power. At least 4,288 of the 11,500 ordered engines were delivered, orders were cancelled following the Armistice. Production was continued under the name Armstrong Siddeley Puma when the manufacturer was bought by Armstrong Whitworth and became Armstrong Siddeley. Background The Puma was based on an engine designed by Beardmore Halford Pullinger (BHP) which was selected for production on the recommendation of the Internal Combustion Engine Sub-Committee of the Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in March 1917, despite the engine being still under test. The ADC Nimbus was a British inline aero engine that first ran in 1926. ADC Cirrus
The ADC Cirrus is a series of British aero engines manufactured using surplus Renault parts by the Aircraft Disposal Company (ADC) in the 1920s. The engines were air-cooled, four-cylinder inline types. They were widely used for private and light aircraft. Design and development The Cirrus engine originated in Geoffrey de Havilland's 1924 search for a powerplant suitable for the light two-seat sports biplane which would become the de Havilland Moth. No engine existed at the time with a suitable level of power combined with a low weight. The Aircraft Disposal Company, also known as Airdisco and ADC, were producing the low-cost Airdisco V8 which had been developed by Frank Halford from their large stocks of war surplus Renault V8 aero engines. The ADC Airdisco is a British V-8 aero engine that first ran in 1925. Renault 70 Hp
The Renault 70 hp, (8Ab , 8C) is a French V-8 aero engine that first ran in 1910. The type powered many early military aircraft including the Farman MF.7 Longhorn and the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2. In addition to French production, these engines were also built in the United Kingdom and equipped the majority of British aircraft sent to France at the start of WW1. Design and development As with other Renault air cooled V-8s, the engine has an early form of reduction gearing where the propeller is fixed to the end of the camshaft and turns at half engine speed. This method of gearing allowed the engine and propeller to be run close to their optimum speeds without the additional weight penalty of a gearbox. Engines intended for pusher aircraft were fitted with a centrifugal blower which fed cooling air over the large finned cast iron cylinders. The Aircraft Disposal Company (ADC), or Airdisco, was a British firm established in March 1920 to take advantage of the large number of World War I-surplus military aircraft on the market.Gunston 2005, p.7.
