List Of U.S. States' Poets Laureate
Many of the states in the United States have established the post of poet laureate to which a prominent poet residing in the respective state is appointed. The responsibilities of the state poets laureate are similar to those of the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom and the equivalent Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in the United States, to make public appearances at poetry readings or literary events, and to promote awareness of poetry within their geographical region. , 46 states and the District of Columbia have poets laureate, although a few are presently vacant. The terms can vary in length from state to state. Most states appoint a poet laureate for a one- or two-year term, fewer to several years, and some states appoint a poet to a lifetime tenure. California Poet Laureate
The California Poet Laureate is the poet laureate for the state of California. In 2001, Governor Gray Davis created the official position. Each poet laureate for the State of California is appointed by the Governor of California for a term of two years and must be confirmed by the senate. Previous to Governor Davis' action in creating the position, the title was unofficial and the position was held for life. The program is run by the California Arts Council. Pikes Peak
Pikes Peak is the List of mountain ranges of Colorado#Mountain ranges, highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains in North America. The Ultra-prominent peak, ultra-prominent fourteener is located in Pike National Forest, west of downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado. The town of Manitou Springs, Colorado, Manitou Springs lies at its base. The mountain is named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike, even though he was unable to reach the summit. The summit is higher than any point in the United States east of its longitude. Janice Gould
Janice Gould (1949–2019) was a Koyangk'auwi (Konkow, Concow) Maidu writer and scholar. She was the author of ''Beneath My Heart'', ''Earthquake Weather'' and co-editor with Dean Rader of ''Speak to Me Words: Essays on Contemporary American Indian Poetry''. Her book ''Doubters and Dreamers'' (2011) was a finalist for the Colorado Book Award and the Binghamton University Milt Kessler Poetry Book Award. Gould's poetic efforts were recognized by the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice in 1992. Biography Gould was born on April 1, 1949, in San Diego, California, and grew up in Berkeley. She graduated ''magna cum laude'' from the University of California, Berkeley, earning degrees in Linguistics (B.A) and English (M.A.). Chris Ransick (1962 – 2019) was a writer of literary fiction and poetry from Colorado. Reg Saner
Reginald A. Saner (December 30, 1928 – April 19, 2021) was an American poet and academic. Life and career Reginald A. Saner was born in Jacksonville, Illinois on December 30, 1928. He graduated from St. Norbert College, near Green Bay, Wisconsin. Saner served as an infantry platoon leader in the Korean War. He studied at University of Illinois, and received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at University of Florence. In the early 1960s he married Anne. From September 1962 to December 1998, he taught at the University of Colorado Boulder. Saner lived in Boulder, Colorado. He died there at his home on April 29, 2021, at the age of 92. Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. (December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997), known professionally as John Denver, was an American Country music, country and Folk music, folk singer, songwriter, and actor. Colorado Creative Industries, formerly known as the Colorado Council on the Arts, is an agency of the state government of Colorado, responsible for the promotion of the arts. Lee Herrick
Lee Herrick (born 1970) is a Korean American poet, writer and professor, who was appointed to be Poet Laureate of the State of California, the first Asian American to hold the position, by governor Gavin Newsom in 2022. Biography Herrick is ethnic Korean and was born in 1970 in Daejeon. He was found on the steps of a church, and was adopted by an American couple in San Francisco at age ten months. Herrick grew up in Danville and Modesto, California, where he became interested in literature. After graduating from high school, he went on to attend Modesto Junior College. Herrick lives in Fresno, and has taught English at Fresno City College since 1997.
