Between 1864 and 1958, Queensland Railways ordered 47 types of locomotives for purposes such as freight, passenger and mail train use. Classification Until 1889, each of the isolated sections of the Queensland Railways adopted its own locomotive numbering system. With the impending joining of most of the sections, in 1890 a new centralised classification system was adopted to eliminate duplications. Locomotives on the Southern & Western Railway retained their existing numbers, with locomotives on other networks renumbered where there was a duplication. The classification system consisted of a letter, indicating the number of driving axles, followed by a number, indicating the cylinder diameter in inches and factions of inches. The Queensland Railways A10 Neilson class locomotive was a class of 0-4-2 steam locomotives operated by the Queensland Railways. History Overview The A10 Neilson class comprised 13 locomotives. Eight were built in 1865 and 1866 by Neilson and Company, Glasgow for the Southern & Western Railway operating out of Ipswich railway station, Queensland, Ipswich and another four for the Central Railway operating out of Rockhampton railway station, Rockhampton. One engine was also constructed for Peto, Brassey and Betts, a railway contractor building the line to Toowoomba railway station, Toowoomba. This was later purchased by the Queensland Railway in 1876. All engines were fitted with injectors instead of feed pumps when built. The Queensland Railways 8D11 class locomotive was a single-member class of 0-4-4-0 double boilered steam locomotive operated by the Queensland Railways. History In 1874, the Vulcan Foundry delivered a 0-4-4-0 locomotive to the Norwegian Government Railways, who refused to accept it. After being rebuilt as works number 850, it was trialled by the Queensland Railways on the Ipswich to Toowoomba line and later purchased. Numbered 41, it was named '' Governor Cairns''. The Queensland Railways B12 class locomotive was a class of steam locomotives operated by the Queensland Railways. History The B12 class were built by a number of manufacturers for the Queensland Railways between 1874 and 1882. Originally classified the E class, per Queensland Railway's classification system they were redesignated the B12 class in 1890, B representing they had three driving axles, and the 12 the cylinder diameter in inches. All were withdrawn from Queensland Railways service by July 1929 and most were scrapped, however the remains of number 28 are derelict at Normanton and components of number 40 are at Cooktown. Number 31 was sold to the Aramac Shire Tramway in 1911 and remained in service until 1939. Although it was condemned and copper in the boiler sold for scrap, the remainder of the locomotive remained largely intact until 1963. The boiler is now privately owned and stored at Kallangur. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, a wheel arrangement refers to a locomotive with two engine units mounted under a rigid locomotive frame, with the front engine unit pivoting and each engine unit with six coupled driving wheels without any leading or trailing wheels. The wheel arrangement was mostly used to describe Mallet locomotive types and in some occasions, Double Fairlie locomotives.
