Kingdom Of England
The Kingdom of England was a sovereign state on the island of Great Britain from the late 9th century, when it was unified from various Heptarchy, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, until 1 May 1707, when it united with Kingdom of Scotland, Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, which would later become the United Kingdom. The Kingdom of England was among the most powerful states in Europe during the Middle Ages, medieval and Early modern period, early modern periods. Beginning in the year 886 Alfred the Great reoccupied London from the Danish Vikings and after this event he declared himself King of the Anglo-Saxons, until his death in 899. This is a list of members of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom appointed during the reign of Elizabeth II, from 1952 to 2022. Eight Privy Counsellors resigned during Queen Elizabeth's reign—John Profumo (1963) after misleading the House of Commons, and four others upon criminal conviction carrying a sentence of imprisonment, John Stonehouse (1976), Jonathan Aitken (1997) Chris Huhne (2013) and Denis MacShane (2013); one, Elliot Morley (2011) was expelled (the first expulsion since 1921). Additionally, Lord Prescott, the former Deputy Prime Minister, resigned in 2013 in protest over politicisation of handling of a press complaints charter being considered by the Council. Great Britain, also known as the Kingdom of Great Britain, was a sovereign state in Western Europe from 1707 to the end of 1800.
