List Of Pontifically Crowned Images
The following list enumerates a selection of Blessed Virgin Mary, Marian, Saint Joseph, Josephian, and Christological images venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, authorised by a Pope who has officially granted a papal bull of Canonical coronation, Pontifical coronation to be carried out either by the Pontiff, his papal legate or a papal nuncio. The prescription of the solemn rite to crown venerated images is embedded in the published by the Holy Office on 25 May 1981. Prior to 1989, pontifical decrees concerning the authorization of canonical coronations were handwritten on parchment. After 1989, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments began issuing the specific recognition to crown a religious image, spelling out its approved devotional title and authorizing papal legate. Blessed Virgin Mary
Mary was a first-century Jewish woman of Nazareth, the wife of Saint Joseph, Joseph and the mother of Jesus. Canonical Coronation
A canonical coronation () is a pious institutional act of the pope, duly expressed in a formal decree of a papal bull, in which the pope bestows the pontifical right to impose an ornamental crown, a diadem or an aureola, aureole to an image of Jesus Christ, Christ, Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary or Saint Joseph, Joseph that is widely venerated in a particular diocese or locality. The act was later regulated to Marian images only, through the ''De coronatione imaginum B.V. Mariae'' that was issued on 25 March 1973. Charles Lavigerie
Charles Martial Allemand Lavigerie, M. Afr. (31 October 1825 – 26 November 1892) was a French Catholic prelate and missionary who served as Archbishop of Carthage and Primate of Africa from 1884 to 1892. He previously served as Archbishop of Algiers and Bishop of Nancy. He also founded the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers). He was created a cardinal in 1882. After becoming a bishop in France, Lavigerie established French Catholic missions and missionary orders to work across Africa. Lavigerie promoted Catholicism among the peoples of North Africa, as well as the Black natives further south. He was equally ardent to transform them into French subjects. Benedetto Aloisi Masella (29 June 1879 – 30 September 1970) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as prefect of the Discipline of the Sacraments from 1954 to 1968, and as chamberlain of the Roman Church (or camerlengo) from 1958 until his death.
