University Preparatory Charter Academy
University Preparatory Charter Academy, also known as "U-prep" or "UPREP", was a charter high school in the Oakland Unified School District, California. It was founded in 2001 by Isaac Haqq in the Eastmont Town Center at the corner of 72nd Street and Bancroft Ave. In its first year of operation, the school had about 80 students and taught a ninth grade curriculum, expanding in number of students and grade levels taught each year. The school doubled in size from some 130 to 260 students in 2004. Haqq claimed "We have made it cool to be smart at this school". A large portion of the student body were minorities; 78% were African American, and 15% were Hispanic. In 2007 the school district nullified the school's 2006 exam results after discovering that someone had changed hundreds of test core answers from wrong to right. History The Oakland Aviation High School Design Team was formed in 2002 through a partnership with Oakland Community Organizations, the Port of Oakland, and the College of Alameda with participation and support from the Tuskegee Airmen, Western Aerospace Museum, Oakland Unified School District, and EC Reems Academy of Technology and Art. As a California Public Charter School, it did not charge tuition and or have any admission requirements. Students at the school were enrolled in one of three major areas of concentration: aviation maintenance technology; preparation for a career in business or international trade; or a personalized business internship program. Oakland Senior High School (also known as O-High or OHS) is a State school#United States, public high school in Oakland, California. Established in 1869, it is the oldest high school in Oakland and the sixth oldest high school in the state. History Oakland High was first located at 12th Street and Market Street, then at 12th and Jefferson Street. It has been at its current location at the corner of MacArthur Boulevard and Park Boulevard since 1928. The building that stood before its current manifestation was known as the "Pink Prison" or "Pink Palace." The stairway leading up from Park Boulevard is what remains of the exterior.
