This is a list of by-elections for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. A by-election may be held when a member's seat becomes vacant through resignation, death or some other reasons. These are referred to as casual vacancies. *Brackets around a date (D/M/Y) indicate that the candidate was unopposed when nominations closed or that, as a result of an appeal against an election result, the sitting member was replaced by the appellant. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House, Sydney, Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by Constituency, single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the Optional Preferential Voting, optional Instant-runoff voting, preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals Member of the Legislative Assembly#Australia, MP after their names. Matt Kean
Matthew John Kean (born 16 September 1981) is a former Australian politician who is the Chair of the Climate Change Authority. Prior to this, he was the Treasurer of New South Wales in the second Perrottet ministry of New South Wales between October 2021 and March 2023. He was also the Minister for Energy between April 2019 and March 2023 and was also the Deputy Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party from August 2022 until March 2023. He represented Hornsby for the party in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2024. Kean previously served as the Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation from January 2017 until March 2019 in the first Berejiklian ministry and as the Minister for Environment from April 2019 until December 2021 in the second Berejiklian ministry. Jodi McKay
Jodi Leyanne McKay (born 16 August 1969) is an Australian former politician who was the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament of New South Wales from June 2019 until May 2021. She previously served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Strathfield for the Labor Party from 2015 to 2021. McKay also previously represented Newcastle for one term from 2007 until her defeat at the 2011 election. Between 2008 and 2011, McKay held a number of junior ministerial responsibilities in the Rees and Keneally governments, including serving as the Minister for the Hunter, Tourism, Small Business, Science and Medical Research, Commerce, and Women, and Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Cancer). 2022 Strathfield State By-election
A by-election was held in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Strathfield on 12 February 2022, following the resignation of former leader of the Labor Party Jodi McKay. The Strathfield by-election was held on the same day as by-elections for the districts of Bega, Monaro and Willoughby. The writs for election were issued on 21 January 2022. Nominations for candidates closed seven days later at noon on 27 January, with the ballot paper draw commencing in the morning of 28 January. The NSW Electoral Commission pre-emptively sent postal ballots to all voters registered on the state electoral roll, under a regulation in a COVID amendment to the Electoral Act. Postal votes were checked against in-person voting rolls to prevent double voting. The iVote online voting system was not used at these elections after the system failed during the NSW local government elections in December 2021. Nichole Overall
Nichole Lorraine Overall is an Australian politician. She was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly at the 2022 Monaro state by-election but was subsequently unseated by Steve Whan on 25 March 2023. She was returned to the Parliament of New South Wales to fill a casual vacancy created by outgoing MLC Sam Farraway. Overall studied communications at the University of Canberra before becoming writer, social historian and small business owner. For a number of years she has been a columnist with Canberra CityNews and is also a presenter with Canberra radio station 2CC. Her husband, Tim Overall, was a councillor and mayor on City of Queanbeyan, Queanbeyan City Council. In 2021 Overall was chosen as the National Party candidate for the Monaro by-election caused by party leader John Barilaro's resignation. Giovanni Domenic Barilaro (; born 14 November 1971) is an Australian former politician who served as the 18th deputy premier of New South Wales and the leader of the New South Wales National Party, NSW National Party from 2016 to 2021. A by-election was held in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Monaro on 12 February 2022 upon the resignation of Deputy Premier of New South Wales and Nationals MP John Barilaro. Background The retiring member is former Deputy Premier of New South Wales John Barilaro. He previously served as the Minister for Regional Development (later renamed Minister for Regional New South Wales), Minister for Small Business, and Minister for Skills in the first Berejiklian and second Baird governments, from October 2014 until March 2019; and as the Minister for Regional Tourism in the first Baird government. In October 2021, he announced his resignation as Deputy Premier, Leader of the National Party and member for Monaro, saying it was "the right time for me to hand the reins over". Michael Holland (politician)
Michael Joseph Holland (born 24 September 1957) is an Australian politician and former obstetrician in southern NSW. He is a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and was elected at the 2022 Bega state by-election for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Holland is an obstetrician and gynaecologist who resigned from the Southern NSW Local Health District over concerns around maternity practices at Moruya Hospital. In 2021 he was preselected to run for the Labor Party in the 2022 Bega state by-election, held following the resignation of Liberal MP Andrew Constance. He won the seat on 14 February 2022 with a swing of 12%. Early life and education Holland first grew up in Bankstown, Sydney where he lived above a pub managed by his parents for five years.
