Dry January
The Dry January challenge is a campaign developed and delivered by UK charity Alcohol Change UK where people sign up to Teetotalism, abstain from alcohol for the month of January. The term "Dry January" is a Trademark, registered trademark with Alcohol Change UK and was first registered in 2014. The campaign was first delivered in 2013 by Alcohol Concern (now called Alcohol Change UK). Emily Robinson started an international Dry January campaign when she joined Alcohol Concern in 2012, after giving up alcohol in January 2011 to prepare for a half marathon she noticed the benefits and that people were interested in her experience. While others may have had a month off alcohol (drug), alcohol in January, Robinson was the first person to turn it into a campaign and trademarked Dry January for Alcohol Concern. Cancer Control Month is a month-long United States observance established by , a joint resolution approved in 1938 by the Congress and amended to request the President to issue an annual proclamation. Sikh Heritage Month
Sikh Heritage Month is an annually observed commemorative month in Canada. It is the celebration of Sikhs, Sikh arts, culture and heritage of the Sikhism in Canada, Canadian Sikh community. Sikh Heritage Month is celebrated in April in Canada, where it has received official recognition from the Government of Canada. History In 2013, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario made history by proclaiming April as Sikh Heritage Month in Ontario through Bill 52 put forward by Jagmeet Singh, who was Member of Provincial Parliament (Canada), Member of Provincial Parliament at the time. Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) is an annual campaign to raise public awareness about sexual assault and educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence in the United States. It is observed in April. Each year during the month of April, state, territory, tribal and community-based organizations, rape crisis centers, government agencies, businesses, campuses and individuals plan events and activities to highlight sexual violence as a public health, human rights and social justice issue and reinforce the need for prevention efforts. Second Chance Month
Second Chance Month, observed in the United States during April since 2017, is a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the collateral consequences of the records that follow an arrest or conviction, and unlocking second chances — opportunities for people who have completed their sentences, and remained crime-free, to create a better future for themselves. The awareness effort was started by Prison Fellowship, the nation's largest nonprofit serving incarcerated people, formerly incarcerated people, and their families, and an advocate for justice reform. The effort has since been championed by other nonprofit organizations, policymakers, and business leaders. Activities include promoting public awareness, advocating for legislation that expands access to second chances, and encouraging companies to become second-chance employers. National Poetry Writing Month
National Poetry Writing Month (also known as NaPoWriMo) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. NaPoWriMo coincides with the National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada. History Maureen Thorson, a poet and publisher of Big Game Books announced the project March 17, 2003 as an online project on her blog. She invited other poets with blogs to join her in the project and listed the participating poets. Thorson has continued to run the project each year on her blog with more poets participating as the word has spread about the project. In 2009 the American Academy of Poets tied the project to a fund-raising drive for the Academy. National Poetry Month
National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry which takes place each April, was introduced in 1996 and is organized by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States. National Child Abuse Prevention Month, also known as Child Abuse Prevention Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child abuse. April has been designated Child Abuse Prevention Month in the United States since 1983. Mathematics Awareness Month
The Joint Policy Board for Mathematics (JPBM) consists of the American Mathematical Society, the American Statistical Association, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The Board has nearly 55,000 mathematicians and scientists who are members of the four organizations. Each April, the JPBM celebrateMathematics and Statistics Awareness Month(previously, the month was called Mathematics Awareness Month) to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics and statistics. The event was renamed by the JPBM in 2017. To simplify coordination efforts, the JPBM also decided in 2017 that there will no longer be an annual assigned theme for the month. Jazz Appreciation Month
Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) is a music festival held every April in Canada and the United States, in honor of jazz as an early American art form. JAM was created in 2001 by John Edward Hasse, curator of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. It became a national extension of the original Jazz Awareness Month created by the Louisiana Jazz Federation in New Orleans in 1980. Jazz Appreciation Month was created to be an annual event that would pay tribute to jazz as both a living and as a historic music. Schools, organizations, and governments celebrate JAM with free concerts and educational programs. Its first year was 2001, with funding provided by the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation, which continues to support JAM every year.
