United States Numbered Highways are the components of a national system of highways administered by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), a nonprofit, nonpartisan association, and the various state departments of transportation. These were initially designated on November 11, 1926, and extend throughout the contiguous United States. There are several U.S. Highways that exist entirely within one state. Massachusetts Route 2A
Route 2A is a east–west state highway in Massachusetts. It exists in several sections, mainly as parts of former Route 2 that have been moved or upgraded. Route 2A runs from Greenfield in the west to Boston in the east. It formerly extended to Shelburne Falls in Buckland in the west, but as of 2007, the route terminates at Interstate 91 (I-91) in Greenfield. Quebec Route 143
Route 143 is a north/south highway on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River, in the Centre-du-Québec and Estrie regions of Quebec. Until the mid-1970s when the province decided to renumber all highways other than autoroutes, it was known as Route/Highway 5. Its northern terminus is in Saint-François-du-Lac, at the junction of Route 132, and the southern terminus is in Stanstead, at the border with Vermont where the road continues past the Derby Line–Stanstead Border Crossing as U.S. Route 5 through Derby Line to New Haven, Connecticut. Since Autoroute 55 closely parallels Route 143 for most of its length, much commercial traffic chooses the former. Spaulding Turnpike
The Spaulding Turnpike is a controlled-access toll road in eastern New Hampshire. Its entire length is overlapped by New Hampshire Route 16 (NH 16). Its southern terminus is at the Portsmouth Traffic Circle (I-95/ US 1 Byp.) in Portsmouth, a terminus it shares with US 4 and NH 16. Its northern terminus is at an interchange with NH 125 in Milton, where NH 16 continues north as a two-lane freeway. The turnpike roughly parallels the Maine border.
