Timor-Leste, also known as East Timor, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a country in Southeast Asia. Maubara Important Bird Area
The Maubara Important Bird Area is a 5292 ha tract of land in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern end of the island of Timor in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Wallacea. Description The IBA lies on the northern coast of the island, 37 km west of the national capital, Dili, near the village of Maubara in the Liquiçá District. In elevation it ranges from sea level in the north to about 500 m in the hills to the south. It encompasses the small (8 ha), coastal Lake Maubara, as well as dense stands of ''Corypha'' palm woodland on alluvial soils behind the beach, and intact tropical dry forest extending several kilometres inland from the coast. Tasitolu
Tasitolu (, or , ) is a protected area on the coast of Timor-Leste, west of the capital Dili. The Tasitolu wetlands include three saline lakes, an esplanade, and a beach; it has been designated a Wetland of National Significance. Tasitolu Peace Park was designated in 2002 because of its cultural and historical importance. The Tasitolu Important Bird Area accommodates several near-threatened species. A 2004 reforestation project, which included community member participation, was funded by the national government. Subsequent to the 2006 East Timorese crisis, several hundred people sought refuge at Tasitolu's tent camp, established by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The Sungai Clere Important Bird Area , also known as the Sungai Clere Protected Wildlife Area, and in Indonesian as ''Hutan Metiboat'', is a tract of low-lying forest and grassland in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern end of the island of Timor in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Wallacea. Description The IBA comprises some 423 km2 of forests, grasslands and wetlands bordering the southern coast of the island, some 75 km south-east of the national capital, Dili, in the Manufahi District. Subaun
Subaun is a Important Bird Area (IBA) in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern end of the island of Timor in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Wallacea. Description The IBA lies on the northern side of the island, between the national capital, Dili, and the town of Manatuto. In elevation it ranges from sea level to about 1300 m. It comprises a range of steep hills, peaking at Mount Curi, covered by eucalypt savanna woodland with an understorey of mainly ''Themeda'' and ''Heteropogon (plant), Heteropogon'' grasses. The woodland is dominated by ''Eucalyptus alba'' at the lower levels and ''Eucalyptus urophylla'' above 400 m. Relatively small patches of Tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, tropical dry forest or semi-evergreen forest occur in sheltered areas. Nino Konis Santana National Park
The Nino Konis Santana National Park is Timor-Leste's first national park. The park, established on 15 August 2007, covers . It links important bird areas such as Lore, Mount Paitchau, Lake Ira Lalaro, and Jaco Island. The park also includes of the Coral Triangle, an underwater area which supposedly contains the world's greatest diversity of both coral and coral reef fish. Tatamailau
Tatamailau (Tetum: ''Foho Tatamailau''), or Tata Mailau, also Mount Ramelau, is the highest point in Timor-Leste and also of Timor island at . The mountain is located approximately south of the capital Dili in the district of Ainaro. While East Timor was a Portuguese colony, it was considered the highest mountain of Portugal in the twentieth century, since the highest mountain of Portugal proper is of a more modest height. The name "Tatamailau" is of Mambai origin, and means "Grandfather of All". "Ramelau" meanwhile is the name of the massif of the mountain. The Mount Mak Fahik and Mount Sarim Important Bird Area is a tract of mountainous land in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern end of the island of Timor in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Wallacea. Description The IBA comprises 2961 ha of tropical dry forest some 65 km south-east of the national capital, Dili, in the Manatuto District. The forest occurs around the higher levels, at elevations of 400–1000 m, of the mountains of Mak Fahik and Sarim in the central spine of the island. Mount Diatuto
Mount Diatuto is a mountain in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern end of the island of Timor in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Wallacea. Description Mount Diatuto, at an elevation of 1770 m, is the highest point in an area of steep hills and ridges on the central spine of the island in the Manatuto District, about 42 km south-east of the national capital, Dili. Loré Important Bird Area
The Loré Important Bird Area is a 10,906 ha tract of land in Timor-Leste, a country occupying the eastern end of the island of Timor in the Lesser Sunda Islands of Wallacea. It forms the south-westernmost part of the Nino Konis Santana National Park. Description The IBA encompasses the vicinity of the village of Loré on the southern coast of the Lautém District. In elevation it ranges from sea level to about 500 m. It contains several plant communities including tropical, lowland evergreen forest, tropical dry forest and moist deciduous forest, mangroves, and coastal strand vegetation, forming the largest assemblage of such habitats on the island. Important Bird Area
An Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) is an area identified using an internationally agreed set of criteria as being globally important for the conservation of bird populations. IBA was developed and sites are identified by BirdLife International. There are over 13,000 IBAs worldwide. These sites are small enough to be entirely conserved and differ in their character, habitat or ornithological importance from the surrounding habitat. In the United States the program is administered by the National Audubon Society. Often IBAs form part of a country's existing protected area network, and so are protected under national legislation.
