Carola Baer-von Mathes
Carola Baer-von Mathes (1857–1940) was a German landscape painter. Biography Baer-von Mathes was born on 26 September 1857 in Ried im Innkreis, Austrian Empire. She was married to fellow painter . She exhibited her work at the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. From 1891 to 1899 she exhibited regularly in the Munich Glaspalast, also at the Munich Secession, in the Kunstverein and on the occasion of the exhibitions of the Artists' Association, including in 1903 in the exhibition of works by Munich artists in the Künstlerhaus on the occasion of the 3rd Bavarian Women's Day. From 1890 to 1894, Baer-von Mathes was director of the landscape and still life class of the Munich Artists' Association and taught at the women's academy that emerged from this until the 1930s. Luise Begas-Parmentier
Luise Begas-Parmentier (1843–1920) was an Austrian-German landscape and architecture painter and Salonière. Life and work Begas-Parmentier née Parmentier was born on 15 April 1843 in Vienna, Austria. Following the example of her sister , she decided to become an artist. She received her first training with the landscape painter Emil Jakob Schindler and the etcher William Unger. By the age of twenty-two, she was exhibiting her works on rural themes at the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Around 1875, she began a series of study trips to Italy, focusing on Venice. After 1876, her Italian-themed paintings were a regular sight in exhibitions at the Academy of Arts, Berlin. In 1877 she married her fellow painter Adalbert Begas, who was fifteen years her senior and an equally fervent admirer of Italy. Sibylle Bergemann
Sibylle Bergemann (29 August 1941 – 1 November 2010) was a German photographer. In 1990, she co-founded the Ostkreuz photographers agency. She is remembered for documenting developments in East Berlin during the Communist era and for her international assignments for ''Stern'' and later for '' Geo.'' Early life Bergemann completed clerical training in East Berlin between 1958 and 1960. She developed an interest in photography while working on the editorial staff of the East German entertainment periodical ''Das Magazin''. In 1966 she began to study photography under the photographer and university teacher Arno Fischer, who became her lifelong partner. Gisela Beker
Gisela U. Beker (née Sander, October 9, 1932 – April 18, 2015) was a German-born American artist and painter. Biography Gisela U. Sander was born in Free City of Danzig on October 9, 1932. She had three sons; Erol, Brian, and Gary and a granddaughter, Molly. Queen Fabiola of Belgium promoted the first Visual International Art Exhibition of 122 artists from around the world. Beker's painting ''Graduation Orange'' received the top prize. Beker was a U.S. citizen from 1961. She died in Daytona Beach, Florida on April 18, 2015, at the age of 82. Katharina Eleonore Behrend (July 22, 1888 – November 15, 1973) was a German-born Dutch photographer who is remembered for her work in a wide variety of photographic genres including a nude self-portrait. Biography Born in Leipzig, she grew up in a well-to-do family as the daughter of Robert Behrend, a chemistry professor, later moving to Hanover. Hilla Becher
Hilla Becher (; 2 September 1934 – 10 October 2015) was a German conceptual photographer. Becher was well known for her industrial photographs, or typologies, with longtime collaborator and husband, Bernd Becher. Her career spanned more than 50 years and included photographs from the United States, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Italy. Becher, alongside her husband, received the Erasmus Prize and the Hasselblad Award. The Bechers founded the Düsseldorf School of Photography in the mid-1970s. In 2015, she died from a stroke at age 81, in Düsseldorf. Childhood Becher was born in Potsdam, East Germany. Mary Bauermeister
Mary Hildegard Ruth Bauermeister (7 September 1934 – 2 March 2023) was a German artist who worked in sculpture, drawing, installation, performance, and music. Influenced by Fluxus artists and Nouveau Réalisme, her work addresses esoteric issues of how information is transferable through society. "I only followed an inner drive to express what was not yet there, in reality or thought", she said of her practice. "To make art was more a finding, searching process than a knowing." Jeanna Bauck
Jeanna Bauck (19 August 1840 – 27 May 1926) was a Swedish-German painter known for her landscape and portrait paintings, and her career as an educator, as well as her friendships with Bertha Wegmann and Paula Modersohn-Becker. Early life Jeanna Bauck was born in 1840. She was the daughter of a German-born composer and music critic Carl Wilhelm Bauck (1808–1877) and a Swedish mother, Dorothea Fredrique (1806–1834). She had a sister, Hanna Lucia Bauck, and two older brothers, Emanuel Bauck, and Johannes Bauck. Jeanna was raised in Stockholm. She remained in Sweden until 1863, at which time she moved to Germany to study painting, first in Dresden and then in Munich where she met the Danish portrait painter Bertha Wegmann. Carla Bartheel (born Charlotte Franziska Johanna Barthel; 5 July 1902 – 28 December 1983) was a German film actress and photographer.Giesen p.200 Biography Carla Bartheel was born Charlotte Franziska Johanna Barthel on 5 July 1902. She took acting and singing lessons and planned to train as a dancer, but a cardiac defect prevented this, and led her to acting. She made her film debut in ''Addio giovinezza!'' Uta Barth
Uta Barth (born 1958) is a contemporary German-American photographer whose work addresses themes such as perception, optical illusion and non-place. Her early work emerged in the late 1980s and 1990s, "inverting the notion of background and foreground" in photography and bringing awareness to a viewer's attention to visual information with in the photographic frame. Her work is as much about vision and perception as it is about the failure to see, the faith humans place in the mechanics of perception, and the precarious nature of perceptual habits. Barth's says this about her art practice: “The question for me always is how can I make you aware of your own looking, instead of losing your attention to thoughts about what it is that you are looking at." She has been honored with two National Endowments of the Arts fellowships, was a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004‑05, and was a 2012 MacArthur Fellow.
