The World Aquatics Athletes of the Year (formerly FINA Athletes of the Year) is a set of awards presented by World Aquatics (International Swimming Federation) and the ''FINA Aquatics World Magazine''. Each recognises excellence in five categories of aquatic sports: Swimming (sport), swimming, Diving (sport), diving, synchronized swimming, water polo and open water swimming. The award was inaugurated in 2010. World Aquatics
World Aquatics, formerly known as FINA (; ), is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competitions in List of water sports, water sports. Dušan Mandić ( sr-Cyrl, Душан Мандић; born 16 June 1994) is a Serbian water polo player who plays for Ferencváros. He was a part of the Montenegrin junior water polo team before opting to play for Serbia. With Serbian junior national team he won a gold medal at the 2011 Junior Water Polo World Championship. The International Swimming Hall of Fame and Museum (ISHOF) is a history museum and hall of fame, located at One Hall of Fame Drive, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States, operated by private interests and serving as the central point for the study of the history of swimming in the United States and world. ISHOF exhibits include ancient art and both reproductions and original art depicting famous moments in swimming history from ancient times to modern, swimwear, civil rights, memorabilia, and artifacts belonging to persons who have promoted or excelled in aquatics. ''Swimming World'' Swimmers of the Year is awarded by the American-based ''Swimming World''. There are seven categories: World Swimmer, American Swimmer, European Swimmer, Pacific Rim Swimmer, World Disabled Swimmer, African Swimmer, and Open Water Swimmer of year. An award for male and female is made for each category. The award was inaugurated in 1964, when ''Swimming World'' named Don Schollander as its World Swimmer of the Year. Two years later, a female category was added, and the awards continued in this format until 1980. The winners were mostly American until the rise of East Germany's women in the 1970s, and 1980 saw the creation of subcategories for American and European swimmers. Following the end of the Cold War, Germany declined following the end of the East's systematic state-sponsored doping program, while Australia's swimming team enjoyed a revival. William May (born January 17, 1979) is an American synchronized swimmer. Performing primarily in duets, May won several national and international events. May desired to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympics, but then there was not yet a mixed or male category in Synchronized Swimming. Early career May was born in Syracuse, New York. He became interested in synchronized swimming when he was 10 years old while living in Syracuse, after watching his sister in a beginning class. He explained why he became involved, "I did competitive swimming there and the synchro class was right after it, so we couldn't go home until she was done. It was either try it with her or sit outside the pool and watch her, so my mom told me to try it, just to be in the water and be doing something." Aleksandr Evgenyevich Maltsev (, born 22 June 1995) is a 4-time world champion and 6-time European champion in artistic swimming (mixed duet) and a founder of men's artistic swimming in Russia. Aleksandr is the most titled male artistic swimmer in the world. Cassiel Emmanuel Rousseau (born 4 February 2001) is an Australian diver. Felipe Perrone Rocha (born 27 February 1986) is a water polo player. Born in Brazil, he competed for Spain from 2003 until 2013, including in the 2008 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Olympics. Afterwards he competed for his birth country in the 2016 Summer Olympics, as Brazil earned its first qualifying spot in 32 years as hosts.
