Oxford Branch (New Zealand)
The Oxford Branch was a branch line railway that formed part of New Zealand's Rail transport in New Zealand, national rail network. It was located in the Canterbury, New Zealand, Canterbury region of the South Island, and ran roughly parallel with the Eyreton Branch that was located some ten kilometres south. It opened to Oxford in 1875 and survived until 1959. It was unusual in that for much of its life it linked two main lines, the Main North Line, New Zealand, Main North Line and the Midland Line, New Zealand, Midland Line, the only portion of the proposed Canterbury Interior Main Line to be completed. Christchurch
Christchurch (; ) is the largest city in the South Island and the List of cities in New Zealand, second-largest city by urban area population in New Zealand. Christchurch has an urban population of , and a metropolitan population of over half a million. It is located in the Canterbury Region, near the centre of the east coast of the South Island, east of the Canterbury Plains. It is located near the southern end of Pegasus Bay, and is bounded to the east by the Pacific Ocean and to the south by the ancient volcanic complex of the Banks Peninsula. Ferrymead
Ferrymead is a suburb south-east of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is the main thoroughfare for reaching the eastern sea suburbs such as Sumner, as well as home to a number of cliff-top residences and businesses along the estuary front. After the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, a number of prominent Christchurch businesses relocated to the Ferrymead area, making it into a secondary business hub. Geography Ferrymead is located on the Avon Heathcote Estuary / Ihutai, close to the point where the Ōpāwaho / Heathcote River drains into the estuary, and west of the eventual outflow into Pegasus Bay. To the north lie the oxidation ponds from Christchurch's main sewage treatment works, part of a large wildlife refuge inhabited by many bird species; the northern part of Ferrymead encompasses the restored wetland of Charlesworth Reserve. Opawa
Opawa (; ) is an inner residential suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located approximately south-east of the city centre. Prior to European settlement, much of the area consisted of marshlands and mixed-use vegetation. By the 1850s, the area was sparsely populated by settlers and became a dairying locality, with many of the early settlers being farmers and people of English descent. Opawa had little development in its early years as it transitioned into a residential suburb. An early sign of an emerging European community in the area was the arrival of Rev. William Willock, an early settler area who built a cottage titled "Opawaha Cottage", a reference to the Māori name of the area. Another early European settler, Joshua Strange Williams, abbreviated his property as "Opawa Farm". Opawa, eventually became the recognised name for the area. Middleton, New Zealand
Middleton is a predominantly industrial and wholesale suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand. It is located in the west of the city, between Wigram and Addington, and immediately to the south of Upper Riccarton. Middleton's boundaries are typically defined by major roads. The western and southern boundaries are State Highways 73 and 76 respectively, with State Highway 75 continuing from the junction of the two at the southern tip of Middleton. Blenheim Road, a major Christchurch thoroughfare with multiple retail and commercial premises, forms much of the northern limit, while Matipo Street generally defines the eastern boundary, with Addington Raceway and Horncastle Arena just beyond in neighbouring Addington. Ladbrooks is a locality in Canterbury, New Zealand. It is named after William and Eliza Ladbrook, who moved to the area in 1842 on the boat the ''Birman''. Ladbrooks Hall, built in 1913, was substantially extended in the 1960s. Demographics Ladbrooks statistical area covers .
