List Of British Champions In 5000 Metres
The British 5,000 metres athletics champions covers four competitions; the current British Athletics Championships which was founded in 2007, the preceding AAA Championships (1880-2006), the Amateur Athletic Club Championships (1866-1879) and finally the UK Athletics Championships which existed from 1977 until 1997 and ran concurrently with the AAA Championships. The distance was originally 4 miles but in 1932 switched to 3 miles. Where an international athlete won the AAA Championships the highest ranking UK athlete is considered the National Champion in this list. British Athletics Championships
The British Athletics Championships is the premier national championship in track and field held in the United Kingdom, and are organised by British Athletics. The event has doubled as the main trials meet for international team selection for major events in which Great Britain and Northern Ireland compete, including the Olympic Games, the IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the European Athletics Championships. Only British athletes may formally compete, though in some circumstances British club-affiliated foreign athletes may take part as guests. Since 2023 the Championships have been promoted as the UK Athletics Championships, but are fully a continuation of the British Athletics championships, and separate from the UK Athletics Championships, same-named championships held between 1977 and 1997. William Snook
William Snook (3 February 1861–9 December 1916) was an English running champion, whose life was mired in controversy and ended in poverty. Early life Snook was born on 3 February 1861 at Belle Vue, Shrewsbury, Belle Vue, then in the parish of St Julian's, Shrewsbury, to Mary (formerly Corfield) and George Snook. His father was a quarry owner and highway surveyor. Snook attended Admaston College in Shropshire. The 1881 census of the United Kingdom, 1881 census has him at West View House, Copthorne, Shropshire, Copthorne, Shrewsbury, with his parents, maternal grandmother and three younger sisters. His occupation is given as "clerk". An obituary in the ''Shrewsbury Chronicle'' of 23 April 1917 notes that he was tall, with a chest.
