Lisburn–Antrim Line
The Lisburn–Antrim line is a railway line of Northern Ireland Railways. It links Knockmore Junction on the Belfast–Newry line with on the Belfast–Derry line. It has been closed to passenger services since 2003. History The line was authorised by the ( 24 & 25 Vict. c. cxxii) and opened in 1871 as the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway. The train service on the line was provided by the Ulster Railway until 1876, and by the Ulster Railway's successor the Great Northern Railway thereafter.Hajducki, 1974, page xiii In 1879 the D&A Junction ceased to be a separate company and was absorbed by the GNR. Current status The line is currently closed to passengers after all rail services were withdrawn from the line in June 2003. The stations at , , Legatiriff Halt, and Crumlin have all been closed. Ballinderry Railway Station
Ballinderry railway station served Upper Ballinderry in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is currently closed to passengers. The station was built for the Dublin and Antrim Junction Railway and opened on 13 November 1871. Translink withdrew passenger services from the line when it reopened the more direct (Known as Belfast Central at the time) – route ''via'' . Translink stated that it was unable to maintain two routes to Antrim and after operating a skeleton service on the route announced that it would be mothballed. Translink, a brand name of the Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company (NITHCo), is a public corporation providing public transport in Northern Ireland. NI Railways, Ulsterbus, Goldliner, Metro and Glider are all part of Translink. It is led by CEO Chris Conway. Railway Signalling
Railway signalling (), or railroad signaling (), is a system used to control the movement of railway traffic. Trains move on fixed rails, making them uniquely susceptible to collision. This susceptibility is exacerbated by the enormous weight and inertia of a train, which makes it difficult to quickly stop when encountering an obstacle. In the UK, the Regulation of Railways Act 1889 introduced a series of requirements on matters such as the implementation of interlocked block signalling and other safety measures as a direct result of the Armagh rail disaster in that year. South Eastern Regional College
South Eastern Regional College (SERC) is a further and higher education college in the south-east of Northern Ireland. SERC was created following the merger of three institutes of further and higher education in the south-east of Northern Ireland. These were East Down Institute, Lisburn Institute and North Down and Ards Institute. The merger took effect from August 2007. The college was inspected in 2009 by the Education and Training Inspectorate, with the finding that "the quality of education and training provided by the South Eastern Regional College is good". Passing Loop
A passing loop (UK usage) or passing siding (North America) (also called a crossing loop, crossing place, refuge loop or, colloquially, a hole) is a place on a single line railway or tramway, often located at or near a station, where trains or trams travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Trains/trams going in the same direction can also overtake, provided that the signalling arrangement allows it. A passing loop is double-ended and connected to the main track at both ends, though a dead end siding known as a refuge siding, which is much less convenient, can be used. A similar arrangement is used on the gauntlet track of cable railways and funiculars, and in passing places on single-track roads. Ideally, the loop should be longer than all trains needing to cross at that point. Aldergrove, County Antrim
Aldergrove is a hamlet and townland sub-division in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is within the townland of Seacash and parish of Killead – south of Antrim and west of Belfast. It is part of the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey. The name Aldergrove is more commonly used to describe the major airfield to the north east of the hamlet. Two long runways serve both the civil Belfast International Airport and the British Army's Aldergrove Flying Station (formerly the RAF base RAF Aldergrove). Belfast International Airport
Belfast International Airport is an international airport northwest of Belfast in Northern Ireland, and is the main airport for the city of Belfast. Until 1983, it was known as Aldergrove Airport, after the nearby village of Aldergrove, County Antrim.
